Just wanted to put in a good word for Brassed Off and westerns.
I was brought up on westerns. What about The Searchers, 3:10 to Yuma, The Last Wagon, The Far Country, Ride the High Country, Where the River Bends, The Hanging Tree and more recently Open Range. Many of these are rarely shown on TV. To return to the original question - dislikes Anything by Richard Curtis (on the big screen) The Krays (and their imitators) Costume dramas (can just about handle them on tv) and now shoot me if you like but Trainspotting (vastly over-rated) Shallow Grave (even more over-rated) 28 Days Later Morvern Callar Anyone I haven't offended? |

Cut'n'paste "film" magazines like Empire rely totally on advertising for their profit..(the cover price only covers printing costs)...it is unlikely therefore that they will ever "slag" any major studios product off bigtime because they will be denied access to the stars of the next film or they will be denied access to the "sneak preview pics" of upcoming pictures.....enormous pressures both financial and otherwise are brought to bear on these magazines/newspapers/T.V. progs to give the "right" view of a movie. (look at what happened to the wonderful Danny Kelly when as editor of "Q" magazine he only thought of doing a hatchet job on Diana Ross's acting) The movie makers couldn't give a toss whether it's a good film or whether you like it...as long as you pay to go and see it....because once they got your money..tough..they don't care.... Perhaps a better system would be to let people in to cinemas for free and they pay according to their enjoyment on the way out....( well it's a thought) As for most disliked films ?....anything by Winner.M ( Greenaway.P has already been mentioned as has Curtis R.) and most of Alan Parkers canon. It's got to be Michael Winner every time for me. The last film of his I saw was Dirty Weekend, which was shot (unfortunately not fatally) with all the style and verve of an industrial training film.
The strange thing is that much of his sixties stuff is well worth a watch (I'll Never Forget What's isname, for example), and even some of the early seventies thrillers, especially The Mechanic. Death Wish gets a certain amount of praise, but just imagine how good it could have been if made by a director if real talent and intelligence. |

To return to the original question - dislikes

[/QB][/quote] Spot on with that little lot - in their defence Trainspotting & Shallow Grave were at least competent. 28 Days Later could've/should've been a good film but failed - Threads was far better. And as for the wretched Morvern Callar.....What was that really rubbishy (British) film of a few years back about students trapped in a nuclear bunker by one of their mates. Great premise, stinker of a film. But let's say a big thank you that Michael Winner is no longer magicking celluloid into s**t!! I hope. |

Anything with Hugh Grant
Anything involving Mel Smith Anything involving Rowan Atkinson Anything with Emma Thompson Anything with Carter Helena Bonham Lock Stock wannabes British films trying to imitate US blockbusters British films trying to emulate the Ealing era (Local Hero being the exception clap ) Kitchen sink dramas Working class dramas (bearable on television, but you don't pay a handsome sum to look at the world you are living in) Tacky sex comedies of the seventies (yes,I do mean the latter Carry Ons as well) Cinema versions of sitcoms (Porridge being the exception;even the sublime Steptoe and Son and Till Death Us Part were rubbish) Arty farty films funded by the National Lotto, which are probably seen only by the director's friends and neighbours I prefer older British films, that is why I never see British films at the cinema. I agree with most. Although, I like one or two with Emma and Helena, but I won't dispute your opinion. I think I've read anti-Hugh remarks before (haven't seen much of his films) Is it because he blinks and plays weak men? I thought he was good in Sense and Sensibility, but hated Notting Hill, although he wasn't the villain of that picture. I have seen a similar dislike for Liz Hurley. Must be related? I really don't know much about them, so... There is a lot I don't like in the movies, but I don't want to waste server memory on that one. |

Threep. P.S. at the risk of starting another debate, I was once told at Bray Studios that the way to tell a GOOD British film from a BAD one was to look at the film score..if it was written, or arranged, or orchestrated by Muir Matheson it would be a crap film if not it would be a good 'un... ....of course this may just be a load of dingo's kidneys... |
