Muir's filmography would take some beating.

He worked cheap.

(which may be indicative of the type of films he worked on....)

Of course many movie legends abound...so the gentleman from Bray may have only been passing on the same sort of inside gossip as the theory that the number of roars of the lion ( at the beginning of a film ) depicts whether or not M.G.M thought they had a hit on their hands... 3 Good ....1 poor...

I think you'll struggle to come up with a big name director he never worked with. The early Korda films he worked on would have undoubtably been the most expensive in this country.

Absolutely.....and if all the budget was on the screen, where better to save money than the soundtrack?

I'm sure Matheson must have worked on some really fine films....( the law of averages dictates that ).... but show me an old black and white stinker....and I'll just bet his name appears on the credits...

P.S. at the risk of starting another debate, I was once told at Bray Studios that the way to tell a GOOD British film from a BAD one was to look at the film score..if it was written, or arranged, or orchestrated by Muir Matheson it would be a crap film if not it would be a good 'un...

....of course this may just be a load of dingo's kidneys... [/b]
Dingo's kidneys it is. Muir Mathieson's name was on so many films because he was head of the music department at Denham studios under both Alexander Korda and J. Arthur Rank.

Probably the most prolific conductor in British films, he conducted the orchestra for practically every British classic film from 1939 until the late 1950s.

Sure, his name is on quite a few bad 'uns. But as his name is on just about every film made at Denham (& quite a few made at other studios) that isn't surprising. But his name is on plenty of good films as well.

Here's a Westerns theory. Two 1960 films pointed the future road in two directions. The Magnificent Seven, with stylised action and inherent humour, to the spaghetti westerns; One-Eyed Jacks, with romantic photography and contrasting explosive violence, to Sam Peckinpah.

Any takers for this idea? (A poor little theory, but my own....)
