Last night I watched the UK B Movie film Breakaway from 1955 starring Tom Conway, Honor Blackman, Alexander Gauge, Freddie Mills, Michael Balfour, Brian Worth, Bruce Seton & John Horsley. I enjoyed this film, but then I love the 40's, 50's & 60's UK Low Budget Thrillers/B-Movies/Quota quickies. Recently released by Odeon Entertainment, I hope they continue to release these kinds of films. I was amazed that since its original release, it's only had one transmission on TV.
Following on from Breakaway (1955), I watched It's Hard to Be Good from 1948 and starring Jimmy Hanley. He plays Captain James Gladstone Wedge who after leaving the army decides to spread goodwill to everyone. Unfortunately, not everyone is interested in goodwill to all men. After leaving the army he goes to live with his Aunt & Uncle and the rest of the family. They are not too keen to have him, and he sets about spreading good will to the neighbours and to the rest of the townsfolk with disastrous and comical results. The film is quite amusing and boasts a very good cast which also includes Anne Crawford, Edward Rigby, Raymond Huntley, Joyce Carey, Muriel Aked and Geoffrey Keen.

Saw a screener of 1408. Started well, built up the tension well and got very spooky with some genuine scary bits. But then got carried away. That said, it's not a bad film at all even gives you a nice spooky ending.

Last night I watched a double-bill first Nightbeat (1947) starring Maxwell Reed, Anne Crawford, Ronald Howard & Christine Nordern. This was followed by The Last Page (1952) starring George Brent, Marguerite Chapman, Diana Dors, Raymond Huntley, Peter Reynolds, Eleanor Summerfield,Meredith Edwards & Harry Fowler. An enjoyable night's viewing.

The Dinner Party
A TV drama starring Alison Steadman, Lee Evans and George Cole.

Rupert Graves plays Roger, a self-made man who loves his creator. It's his birthday and he invites a few people to a dinner party.

Failing salesman Jim (Alun Armstrong) and his wife Juliet (Alison Steadman) have lived in the village and known Roger and his shrewish wife (Elizabeth Berrington, only referred to as The Shrew) for some years. Leo (Lee Evans) and Jackie (Jessie Wallace) have only just moved to the village.

It soon degenerates into the dinner party from hell as the accusations fly and the bullying and backstabbing begin.

What with this, and Abigail's Party, if Alison Steadman ever invites you to dinner it might be safest to decline

Great performances all round

What a great way to spend an evening Joe .... two of my favourite films ... 4 of my favourite actors (Reed, Harvey, Patrick and Shaw).

Also, it gives me another excuse to post a picture of the lovely Susan ...

I watched Pt 1 of Lonesome Dove during the early evening (Boy Wonder and his mum were out) and during the latter part of the evening Mrs Bat and I watched Pimpernel Smith with the great Leslie Howard.

Bats.

Dancing with Crime (1947)
Well-paced second-feature crime drama with a better cast than normally associated with such films.

Default This is England 2007

This is England 2007

My odyssey through Shane Meadows films has reached his most recent offering telling the story of fatherless Shaun Field growing up on the
ubiquitous council estate and his very brutal and sometimes laugh out loud coming of age story.

There is, as with all Meadows films the topics of rasicm and other "isms" tackled head-on brutally and painfully honest,a scene with a robbery in a corner shop,
shocks but this is in my opinion his best film since " A room for Romeo Brass"

This is contemporary British film at its finest

It's a lovely picture of Susan Shaw. I wish they would show or release some of her lesser known and rarely seen films (To The Public Danger, Marry Me, Waterfront, A Killer Walks, Wide Boy, The Large Rope, Time is My Enemy, Stolen Time & Chain of Events). I do enjoy watching her films. Nigel Patrick was an excellent actor I enjoyed his performances in League of Gentleman, Sapphire, The Informers, Trio, Forbidden Cargo, A Prize of Gold & Noose.

Thought the Dinner Party was bloody awful. Loved Abigail's Party but this was just dire. Surprised that these people were in it!!!!

That said everybody else seems to have enjoyed it so it must be me LOL.

Watched another French film last night, Au Revoir Les Enfants. Superb story of Catholic kids evacuated to Vichy Monastry where the monks were hiding a Jewish lad. True story based on events that happened to director Louise Malle.

Also saw film Harsh Times in afternoon (was off work and ironing so it helped pass time).

Ask A Policeman with Will Hay. Probably about the 15th time I have watched it and I still laugh out loud. Marvellous!
