Bats.
But it does have the wondrous Rosamund John in her first film role, as a rather gawky Scots barmaid. She went on to much better things!

The last time I saw Richard Green he was in agony, with embalming fluid corpsing through his veins

Solid thriller well played by all, honours go to Sir Ralph for his portrayal of a study of a meglomaniac in which he degrades both servants(to the extreme) and family alike.

Enjoyable
another film that is rarely shown on tv

Just watched THAT SMASHING BIRD I USED TO KNOW (now available on DVD as SCHOOL FOR UNCLAIMED GIRLS), fresh off the doormat.

Robert Hartford Davis is generally associated with exploitation movies and this (allegedly) is more of the same. However, do away with the odd boobs in the dorms/showers scenes and you have here quite a watchable and (dare I say it) intelligent movie of this type. A lot of the films strength comes from the cast, with Maureen Lipman putting in a decent turn as the betrayed 'hard' character within the dormitory of a remand home.

The 'girls' of the title are rather reliable performers and the films themes do provoke one or two serious thoughts. Not 'high cinema' maybe, and not quite the 'swinging period piece' of its reputation, but worth a look.

Cracking shot towards the start of the film with the horse ride on the downs...

Default The Green Helmet 1961

The Green Helmet 1961

Bill Travers deals with some inner demons on the racetrack before retiring,
Supported by a race team led by a australian Sid James
nice little race action film nothing too demanding and some good stock footage
of races, including the Milia miglia(famous race apparently!)

Fun

The Man Who Finally Died (1963) DVD-R. Intriguing mystery with Stanley Baker returning to Germany, seeking his father who he believes died 30 years previously. Kept me hooked assisted by an excellent cast including Eric Portman, Peter Cushing, Niall MacGinnis and small roles for Nigel Green and Alfred Burke.

Tonight: Yesterday’s Enemy (1959) DVD-R. Absolutely gripping war film set in the Burma jungle during WW2 superbly directed by Val Guest, all the more remarkable considering that no music is used. The tension, horror, bravery and stupidity of war are all captured superbly here. The cast is faultless with Stanley Baker, Gordon Jackson, Guy Rolfe and Leo McKern all quite magnificent. Yet another Hammer film that should be available to a wider audience on DVD, along with the likes of Cash on Demand and Never Take Sweets from a Stranger

Did anyone see this yesterday afternoon? (Clive Brook and Diana Wynyard). I missed the first half. Was it any good?

It's a fairly typical early WW2 propaganda film, but notable for a couple of things; firstly, like very few others, it makes a distinction between the German populace in general and the Nazis - Pastor Hall being another, but there aren't many - and the way German pre-war footage is incorporated into the film very effectively. Directed by Anthony Asquith, it has some nice touches, a fine central performance from Clive Brook (Both these people terribly underrated IMHO) with plenty of fun to be had in spotting young character actors in early roles.

Bit of a Bay Window, what??

I concluded the spooks series 2, with a couple of episodes. That bird off the Railway Children was in it have we started a thread on her yet???

And then I watched Music & Lyrics with fellow Fulham fan Hugh Grant. Now I know some people do not like Hugh, but I think he is very good at what he does. This film turned out to be highly enjoyable and genuinely funny in parts, all in all a good evenings viewing.

Default Perfect Strangers 1945

Perfect Strangers 1945
Married couple Robert Donat and Deborah Kerr go off to war and come home with changed attitudes to life Delightful film, could have been a metaphor for a changing Britain, but at his heart its just a romantic tale
Both leads are always eminently watchable.

What changed my mind about him was seeing him in a few silent films....he was utterly mesmerising. Try and get to see Josef Von Sternberg's gangster film Underworld(1927), he is astonishing.

Bit of a Bay Window, what??
