UP THE CREEK -

A piece of light Hammer comedy with an early star outing for Peter Sellers. Watched it 'cos it had been sitting on the shelf for a while....

I found Sellers really irritating in it because of the terrible Irish accent he was doing, and noting several of his 'standard' mannerisms in his performance.

Somewhat lacking in plot and true humour, but it was nice to see the bubbly Vera Day again and spot Leonard Fenton (Eastender's Dr. Legge) in a very brief throwaway as a copper.

All in all I'd say I prefer Frankie Howerd's performance in the sequel, over Sellers' bosun.

For the location spotters amongst us, the ship was berther in Weymouth Harbour, whilst the village was some miles away at Letchmore Heath, Nr. Elstree (made at the New Elstree Studios...)

THE SHUTTERED ROOM -

Another Oliver Reed ; must be something subliminal !

Anyway, a bizarre movie - but what would you expect from the minds of H.P. Lovecraft and August Derleth ?

Reed plays the brutal leader of a gang of bullying yobs on a strange (New England?) island where everybody seems to be inbred. Carol Lynley (also of island stock) returns from New York with her new husband (Gig Young) after an absence since childhood.

The tale unfolds in a Straw Dogs way as Reed, aided by his cronies, attempts to rape the returning Susanna.

Meanwhile a pall of doom is cast by Flora Robson, who issues dire warnings about the old mill and warns them to go straight back to NY. Oh yes, and something in the mill is killing people...

==========================

Despite dodgy accents from the English supporting cast, Reed turns in a creditable performance as the isolated psychotic lad feared of losing his inheritance. There are some excellent nuances of danger, frustration and helplessness in his performance, for all his character's machismo posturing.

Gig Young is terribly mannered as the elder husband - I couldn't help thinking of him as Adam West, outside the batcape !

Flora Robson and Ann Bell are both wasted in this movie, which seems to come to a rather abrupt conclusion. Did the money run out ?

Some nice editing though, and a great score by the late Basil Kirchin ; occasionally reminiscent of Roy Budd's work on GET CARTER, with it's use of the Tabla.

Worth a view for Reed's performance, but makes sure you can put up with Flora's well-travelled accent...

Is that the one where Ollie's being towed on some kind of board behind a car at some point and comes off into barbed wire?

Women in a Dressing Gown

J Lee Thompson's kitchen sink divorce drama that placed Anthony Quayle in a tug of love between his scatter-brained wife of 20 years and a confident secretary at his workplace. Quayle ultimately follows his conscience but there's a telling final shot of his wife slipping into a knowing routine but turning on the radio and a look of realisation on her husbands face.

Imho Quayle is miscast as a working-class tower block resident and is something of a cold fish in an emotional role but it's certainly a film worth seeing. Thompson, Quayle and Syms would shortly reunite for Ice Cold in Alex.

I agree DB7, Quayle was a distinctly odd piece of casting, but the film is Mitchell's tour-de-force ; a marvellously played character study. She makes it look so easy - so you can be sure that it wasn't...

Nice little role for the lovely Carole Lesley too.

Definitely worth seeing !

Indeed, she steal the show, especially the trip into town for a new hairdo that results in her downing a bottle of whisky and collapsing on the floor. Think it also called for a leap of faith that Sylvia Syms would fancy at fairly dull Anthony Quayle.

The Mind of Mr Soames

A criminally overlooked science feature from Amicus. The sleeve and tagline (Can this baby kill?) give the deceptive impression that the enclosed film is a typical 70s shocker when in fact it's a sensitively handled character study. After 30 years in a coma, Terence Stamp (his final film before going cinema awol) is brought back to consciousness at a Midlands neurological hospital - but despite having the body of a man he possesses the mind of a child. Two doctors with vastly differing approaches clash over the best way to rehabilitate Stamp; Robert Vaughn (beard 'n all) prefers a more humanist approach while Nigel Davenport opts for a more studious education regime. Stamp rebels again his captivity and breaks free from the hospital into a world he has no knowledge of.

An engaging film only let down by an unsatisfying ending.

Deadly Strangers

Psycho killer road movie told in part in flashback. An unidentified escaped mental patient is on the loose, and on the same day strangers Simon Ward and Hayley Mills are thrown together after he picks her up on the side of the road. After knocking a Hells Angel from his bike the duo avoid the police road blocks; but is the road accident and Ward's drinking the real reason for them avoiding the police?

Cliched thriller in which you know the whole film is building up to a suspenseful finale - but the twist in the tale is well handled if not unexpected.

One of the many fascinating things about films and this web site is the way that something is sparked by what has been posted or a by-product of what is posted.

That is putting it very badly indeed, but what I wanted to say is that I was watching Leslie Norman's Dunkirk on TV last night, and one of the actors looked very familiar. Only a small part, that of a merchant small boat owner, and only in one scene. I had to look up www.imdb.com, and sure enough, there he is: Joss Ambler. Dunkirk apprears to have been his last film (1958), indeed he died the next year, according to IMDB.

His is one of those faces that will seem very familiar to anyone who has watched many British films from the 1930's onwards: he was in George Formby films, (Trouble Brewing and Come on George, two of my favourites), and (Steve) in Contraband and The Silver Fleet (as Smit) and also (getting to the point at last!) Ghost Ship - where he played the yacht harbour manager.

He never seems to age, always the same in appearance and manner: he could be summed up in two words: irascible, glasses.

One of my chief delights are these little byways of film :)

Plague Dogs

2D animated film voiced by such luminaries as John Hurt, Christopher Benjamin, James Bolan, Nigel Hawthorne and Warren Mitchell. Two dogs break out from a Cumberland animal-testing centre and roam free in the Lake District living off slaughtered sheep. It seems only a matter of time before the duo are caught but with the help of a wily fox they evade both the local farmers and the authorities. Sadly it can't last.

Beautifully animated feature that could almost be described as a canine When the Wind Blows. Not on for pet-loving children.
