Default The Liquidator

The Liquidator 1965

Rod Taylor is Britains newest secret agent, but Rod is more
interested in the fringe benefits and delegates Eric Sykes to do the dirty work
Good fun is had by all in this Jack Cardiff (Im embarrassed to say I didn’t know Jack was a director as well as a cinematographer )spoof
First time viewing for me of this exciting romp, excellent support cast
and who would of thought of using David Tomlinson as a ruthless assassin!

Great fun

Great fun
I seem to remember some enjoyable hamming by Akim Tamiroff

That's the joke that killed the Music Hall

And a quick nod to Trevor Howard doing his baleful bit as the "M" character.

. . . and new thumbscrews for me . . .

yes he looks like having fun until David Tomlinson despatches him, casting is quite interesting here to say the least,John Le Mesurier is a Russian ,Tomlison an assassin
Jill st John a ruthless agent,Eric Sykes and Derek Nimmo play it very straight and the rest of the cast play it for laughs.

The Liquidator is great fun.

Check out some of Jack's other work as director
Sons and Lovers (1960)
Scent of Mystery (1960) - in "Smell-o-Vision" (which wasn't a success)
My Geisha (1962)
The Long Ships (1964)
Young Cassidy (1965) - John Ford fell ill during production and was replaced by Jack
The Mercenaries (1968)
The Girl on a Motorcycle (1968)

The Long Ships is wonderfully campy stuff ... I especially remember the bit where that guard is asked to ''ride the mare of steel''.

Don't miss out on a chance to win a rare film in Bat-Quiz 13 closing date - 31/8/8.

I watched some extras from the Prisoner Box set including an american documentary. Whet my appetite to re run the whole series. I followed up with Tommy Lee Jones directorial debut, the 3 Funerals of , obviously not a Brit Flic but absolutely superb, highly recommended. I then watched the Third Man again, flawless.

Impossible to see DT as an assassin. For me he will always be Mr Banks in Mary Poppins. "[Lordly is]The Life I Lead" must be one of the great film musical songs of all time. A good one to sing when one's self-esteem is low, although he of course does not know just what a mess his life is in!

"I've come a long way you know!" "Equally long way to go back..."

Silent Dust (again) featuring the great Nigel Patrick. Simply, a marvellous film. Highly recommended.

Don't miss out on a chance to win a rare film in Bat-Quiz 13 closing date - 31/8/8.

Last night I watched The Internecine Project from 1974 which I recorded off ITV 4 on Monday night. Interesting film, starring James Coburn, Lee Grant, Ian Hendry, Harry Andrews, Michael Jayston, Keenan Wynn, Christiane Kruger and Terence Alexander.

Last night I watched a real oddball- Car of Dreams (1935) a musical comedy with John Mills, Robertson Hare and (what can only be described as) a quaint little German actress called Grete Mosheim. John Mills made a gallant attempt at singing a couple of numbers. Dancing was beyond him so he marches about instead as he sings. In one scene he does a couple of dance steps but the camera mercifully does not show his feet! I have to say I enjoyed it, but it was a real oddity. It seemed to be more an attempt to rival the American screwball comedy than a musical in the true British mould.

Funny -

Sir John started out as a hoofer, sharing the stage on occasion with Doris Hare - later to find fame as Ma Butler in ON THE BUSES...

Interesting... thanks! I wonder why they wouldn't let him dance in this one then.
