Dark Places - a 1973 thriller-cum-ghost story starring Robert Hardy, Christopher Lee, Joan Collins, Herbert Lom, Jane Birkin and Jean Marsh.

Hardy inherits a rambling old country house but finds himself disturbed by a ghostly presence therein as well as to the more venal machinations of local GP Lee, his saucy sister Collins and lawyer Lom.

Directed by Don Sharp this is fairly slow-moving stuff with an oddly cast Hardy in the lead giving the rest of the impressive cast little to do (although Jean Marsh makes the most of her brief role).

Last night I watched Made from 1972 starring Carol White, Roy Harper, John Castle, Margery Mason, Doremy Mason, Bob Harris and Sam Dastor.

Carol White gives a brilliant performance as Valerie a single mother who lives on a building estate in the East End of London with her sick Mother played by Margery Mason who forms a relationship with a rock/folk star played by Roy Harper.

Default A Great Little Musical

One of my favourites is Three Hats for Lisa, a great British Musical from the mid-1960s and I viewed this again last night.
I rate this film very good with a very good cast, who could go wrong with Sid James playing a taxi driver. His dancing is so bad it is brilliant. I good musical score with plenty of variation and change of scenes to suit.
The whole film is about an Italian film star's visit to London for one day and the theft of three hats for her collection. Simple yet cleaver comedy. A vehicle for Joe Brown who did very well and, I might add, a very underrated stage performer and fine musician who is still touring. Why he is never on television is a mystery

Again as per Suze's recent comments on Sir John Mills' dancing in CAR OF DREAMS, Sid was another artiste who started his career on the boards as a hoofer. IIRC he had an dancing 'act' with his first wife...

I agree his dancing in THREE HATS is a little stiff - and more than a little comical - but I suposse that was the desired effect; after all one probably wouldn't expect your average east end cabbie to be a twinkletoes...

Just the point that I was making Smudge, Sid would play the part like and ordinary bloke and so likable. The dance in the park was really down played and just right.
Fred Astaire would not fit this film!

Margery Mason - such a brilliant and underrated actress - still alive I believe - bit parts now I think - probably due to age - the last time I saw her was in the film Iris- Judi Dench - she was billed as "woman on a bench".

To Smudge

According to a book I read on Sid James life, he was a hairdresser in Joburg and married to the boss's daughter, before he alone moved to London after WW2. Can't remember anything about a dancing act. It did say he completely re invented himself in England and never acknowledged his kids and family left behind in SA.

Are you sure?

Last night I watched another episode from the 1974 Special Branch series entitled Rendezvous. No Patrick Mower in this episode but George Sewell, Paul Eddington and Paul Antrim appear as the regulars in this episode. Guest Stars include Anthony Nicholls, the lovely Cyd Hayman and Geoffrey Chater.
