"The smallest show on earth"

A nice surprise on Sydney,s TVS channel. I normally have to record

British films in the wee small hours on ABC. This one was on at 8.30pm.

Lovely treat!!!

Last night I watched a double bill of films, first up was Negatives from 1968 starring Peter McEnery, Glenda Jackson, Diane Cilento, Billy Russell and Maurice Denham. Directed by Peter Medak, a rather bizarre film to say the least.

The final film was Run A Crooked Mile from 1969 starring Louis Jourdan, Mary Tyler Moore, Wilfrid Hyde-White, Alexander Knox, Terence Alexander, Norman Bird, Bernard Archard and Laurence Naismith. Quite an entertaining mystery film.

Inspired by a chat with a colleague at work (yes, I've finally found somebody who likes to talk Britfilm! )...

DANCE OF THE VAMPIRES - Roman Polanski's 60s take on the Transylvanian myths, with a career best performance from Ferdy Mayne, great character playing by Polanski himself, some wonderful sets by Wilf Shingleton and (of course) the beautiful Sharon Tate.

But the film is stolen by Alfie Bass' wonderful rendition of Shagal, the vampirised innkeeper who manages to be humourous and sinister in equal measure.

OK, so it drags a bit in places but it has just about enough wit and style to carry it off. And the chase with the gay vampire son of the Count is still quite creepy even now.

To top it all it was snowing outside as we watched...wonderful !

EDIT: Does anyone know if a proper British print of this film still exists, with it's TRUE title ?

I would imagine the print still does exist as the latest DVD version is the original UK long cut of the film 'Dance of the Vampires' just the original title has been replaced with the US Fearless title, if you look about you can still pick up the pre certificated VHS from dealers or auction sites, this has the film with the original title. I can't remember though if it is presented in widescreen or it has been pan and scanned.

A brilliantly haunting film with an equally haunting soundtrack.
The garlic and crucifixes wouldn't keep Alfie at bay!

Ebay would be your best bet.

Never Let Go (1960)

Richard Todd is quite effective in this tight little thriller about a little man who takes on the crooks who stole his car. Chief crook is Peter Sellers in his first dramatic role, and he handles his part well, even if there is a whiff of the pantomime villain about it. Carole White is suitably sleazy as Sellers' teenage mistress, and shows the potential she was to demonstrate in Cathy Come Home and Poor Cow. Pop idol Adam Faith acts tough, or at least tries to, as one of the gang, and while he doesn’t convince, he’s a good looking lad, who some might even say was sexy! All in all this is a straightforward crime drama, which is well worth a look.

Start every day with a smile and get it over with.

Thanks for the VAMPIRES advice chaps...

Watched LES BICYCLETTES DE BELSIZE last night. It's wonderful to have a decent print of Douglas Hickox's short romance out on DVD at last. Kitsch, 'swinging' and quirky, this little film is a delight from start to finish. Filmed on location in Hampstead - obviously the closest they could get to Montmartre near London...

Just watched BLAME IT ON THE BELLBOY - I recorded this simply for its Venetian locations, as that is one of our favourite places. In the end, however, I actually sat down and quite enjoyed watched it. This comedy of errors is rather well constructed and whilst not a high point of British comedy, it has its moments. Even Mrs. Smudge said at the end that she couldn't believe she'd enjoyed a film with Dudley Moore in it...

of hit & hope. Its nice to have 2 extra channels though.

The Strange Affair
60s tale of police corruption and a raw recruit who slowly allows his morals to slip. Well-written drama but the villains participation is severely underdeveloped.

Alfie Bass was a good actor, he cropped up in a lot of good roles.

god point about adam faith and his looks. If he was not a looker he ,perhaps, could have been a bigger film star. He was a good actor, though.

I can't disagree with that!

THE BESPOKE OVERCOAT, virtually a two-hander for him and Kossoff, is an absolutely brilliant little film.

Must admit that I love his machinations to frustrate his oppo at every turn in BOOTSIE & SNUDGE too...
