I wonder how many of the audience would have noticed Paul Eddington in literally every single episode in some seasons, alternating between being a peasant and a noble. It's interesting to spot which ones were written by blacklisted Hollywood writers - there's loads about wily peasants rising up against their evil overlords.

As I recall (haven't watched the show in ages) PE eventually was given a regular role as Will Scarlett.

Yes - he talks about this in his autobiography. Basically he was better off being a guest as he got a meaty part every third episode rather that just saying 'But Robin, there's one thing I don't understand...'

Last night I watched The Primitives from 1962, a british b-film starring Jan Holden, George Mikell, Rio Fanning, Peter Hughes, Bill Edwards, Derek Ware, Terence Fallon and John Junkin. Jan Holden plays Cheta the leader of a nightclub act called The Primitives. The Primitives are also a gang of jewel thieves. An unusual film in that the leader of the gang is a woman played by the attractive Jan Holden.

Lastly was Blind Spot from 1958 released by Butchers Films and starring Robert MacKenzie, Delphi Lawrence, Gordon Jackson, John le Mesurier, George Pastell, Ronan O'Casey, Anne Sharp, Ernest Clark and a very young Michael Caine. Blind Spot is a remake of the 1950 film Blackout which starred Maxwell Reed and Dinah Sheridan albeit with slight changes to the original film. All in all not a bad film

On the recommendation of penfold, I watched George Formby in Trouble Brewing. After an initial period of confusion as to what the crooks' dastardly plan was (who knew that 'slush' was slang for forged banknotes? Not me, anyway) I quite enjoyed it as long as I didn't try to find it funny. Googie Withers was charming as a secretary who successfully vamps her boss ('She'll be wearing a fur coat next week', mutters the sardonic cleaning woman) and Basil Radford puts in an excellent perfomance as 'uncredtied drunk at party'.

A Dandy In Aspic - a slightly muddled (not surprising since director Anthony Mann died before it was finished) spy thriller with Laurence Harvey. It features good performances and some excellent photography. Very entertaining.

I watched the Way Ahead with David Niven and William Hartnell, excellent war effort. I then watched an episode of Randall & Hopkirk, the Man from Nowhere featuring the excellent Ray Brooks, superb entertainment.

Never Back Losers - a rather good Edgar Wallace mystery which was more Dick Francis than EW. A good cast (inc Jack Hedley, Patrick Magee) and a pretty good script keep this one rattling along. Jacqueline Ellis and Larry Martin made for a nice brother/sister pair of characters as well.

Jacqueline Ellis with husband Jeffrey Bernard (he looked unwell in those days too!)

Watched The Small World of Sammy Lee with Anthony Newley, great performance from AN and excellent shots of Soho as it was in the early 60s.

One of the best films I've watched in ages !

Two episodes of series 1 of Special Branch, 'Troika' and 'Smokescreen'. Both superbly written with fine performances from the cast, especially Wensley Pithey. Recommended.

Blue Remembered Hills and the first three episodes of Porridge.

Really enjoyed all of it.
