Not seen the film for years but I saw it on stage at the National a few weeks ago (with Simon Russell Beale as Undershaft) and it occurred to me that it's got exactly the same plot as The Apprentice with the evil industrialist hiring someone completely unsuitable to go and work on a trading estate while pretending it's a great prize. Must revisit the film.

'Reach for the Sky'. I'd forgotten how stunning Muriel Pavlow was! I love Kenneth More too!

A thriller double-bill ...
The Man Who Cheated Himself with Lee J Cobb. An excellent, though relatively obscure, film noir with Cobb in fine form as a cop who drops himself in the brown stuff. Great atmosphere and an exciting climax make this one a winner. Recommended. Followed by Tarzan's Greatest Adventure, with Gordon Scott on the trail of those very nasty bad guys Anthony Quayle and Sean Connery. Filmed in colour and on location this is a thrilling adventure story with Scott a superb Tarzan and Quayle outstanding as a ruthless killer. Highly recommended for jungle fans.

The Interrupted Journey (1949) with Richard Todd, Valerie Hobson and Tom Walls.
Unsuccesful writer John North (Todd) elopes with his publisher's wife but gets cold feet and leaves her stranded on a train. He then sets in motion a series of events that lead to mayhem and murder. Walls gives a superbly understated performance as a detective on Todd's trail and Hobson is good value as Todd's wife. The direction by Daniel Birt is fist class and he manages to create an almost Hitchcockian ambience at times. He is helped by some first-class set design and photography. I had not seen this film before and found it hugley enjoyable, right up to the unexpected twist at the end. Highly recommended.

Caught up with Thursday night's edition of THE INVISIBLES. This was the story they should have had on first, to capture the viewers. Much better plotted and quite entertaining - a better part for Jenny in this at last!
Didn't manage to get round to THE WOMAN IN BLACK - maybe tonight... Smudge

The Hound of the Baskervilles
The BBC 1968 version. Interesting to compare it to the Hammer version also starring Cushing. This is much closer to the novel but also less atmospheric. It also suffers from being an early colour TV production with the interiors shot on tape and the exteriors on film. Cushing acts well as Holmes but Nigel Stock is a bit too Bruceish unlike his predessor Andre Morell. It was the first version to actually be shot on Dartmour.

Reliable performances from all involved; Hendry and Fraser make a breat police pairing - some nice 'fencing' with Kieron Moore in the gambling club and an assured performance from Rosalie Crutchley as the opera singer's dresser. This film should be much better and more widely appreciated than it is... Smudge

I have the Girl in the Headlines courtesy of those nice people at Odeon. A nice turn from James Villiers as well. A good thriller.
