Last night I watched a double bill of films from 1957 starting off was No Time For Tears starring Anna Neagle, Sylvia Syms, Anthony Qualye, George Baker, Flora Robson, Joan Hickson, Alan White, Daphne Anderson, Sophie Sterwart, Angela Baddeley, Rosalie Crutchley, Cyril Chamberlain, Joan Sims, Richard O'Sullivan, Michael Hordern, Victor Brooks and Adrienne Posta. The film is set in a Children's Hospital focusing on the lives of the patients, doctors, nurses etc. Some touching moments.
Lastly was The Flesh Is Weak starring John Derek, Milly Vitale, Freda Jackson, William Franklyn, Martin Benson, Patricia Jessel, Norman Wooland, Patricia Plunkett, Vera Day, Harold Lang, Shirley Anne Field, John Paul, Denis Shaw, Charles Lloyd Pack and Paul Stassino. A Raymond Stross production directed by Don Chaffey. An interesting story of prostitution in London and the pimps behind the racket. Some good performances. |

My viewing last night was a 1962 film, the War Lover starring Steve McQueen. Although I'd read the book many years ago I had never seen this film. I was impressed. Beautifully understated, very human with imaginative and subtle camera shots - you have a tail gunner's eye view as his aircraft taxies out for take off for instance. The final scenes where a lone McQueen is struggling to keep his stricken aircraft above the waves of the Channel are very good and I found myself willing him to get enough height to clear the approaching cliff tops. Some years ago I read that the three B17 aircraft used were scrapped after filming had been completed; seems unbelievable now but such things had less value in the 60's. For those of you who enjoy war films and haven't watched this one I highly recommend it.

Is Johnny Angel the film with the wonderful quote: Gangster gives some money to fence, "On account". Fence: "On account of how much?" Gangster: "On account of that's all you're goin' to get!" I know it was a George Raft film but can't remember which one. Can you help?
