Presumably he was a back stabbing-businessman. he was also clearly a miser - despite living a vast country house he and his wife seemed to restrict their lives to a smallish, overfurnished room off the main front door.

Thats the joke that killed the Music Hall !

Cloudburst (1951) DVD-R. Slow starting but competent Hammer film starring Robert Preston as a man bent on revenge, written by Leo Marks and the background of the story is one familiar to him, with Preston as the head of a code cracking department.

First film to be completed at the then newly-acquired Bray Studios IIRC. This is a good 'slow burn' revenge plot, with Robert Preston providing a creditable performance as the vengeful 'hero'. Nice little snidey coward performance from Harold Lang too - pretty much to his 'type', but good nonetheless.

In the Smudge household we watched the musical/thriller BBC TV series BLACKPOOL on DVD (Mrs. Smudge's choice.) We were curious as to why it finished so abruptly though; once the champagne haze had cleared this morning I realised that Disc 2 had been left in the box....

Default It Happened Here (????)

It Happened Here(????)

The year is 1940 and German forces have successfully invaded Britain,a young nurse is evacuated to London
and witnesses the birth of a new fascist state.

This film has a remarkable history for its creators and must be part of British filmic folklore.
It looks like a psuedo documentary ,very similar to Loaches Poor Cow in style and look.
The acting and plot( both non professional) is not really what makes the film what it is,it is the subject matter, the portrayal of
the British people as a subserviant and collaborative nation under a national socialist state.

I found it genuinely unsettling the sight of plummy voice and obligatory cockney characters issuing the fascist doctrine and the newsreel type footage of German soldiers strolling around London enjoying the sights and hospitality.

There are also two important scenes, one with a question and answer session the nurse has with collegues at her ambulance station
which shows a genuinely vile outlook on the new state and a scene of a cottage hospital where the nurse is seconded and a nasty secret it hides.

The ending is slightly confused,I would guess but its not made clear that the Americans invade the west coast of Britain, or
do the resistance hold control of parts of England, but the closing meesage is, is that liberation in 1945 is close at hand .

A remarkable little film.

Harold Lang was a Hammer regular in the 1950s - he was always memorable ...another of those forgotten character players. Does anybody have a photo ?

Sir Henry at Rawlinson End
Reminded me of some of the Goonish shorts like Running, Jumping and Mukkinese Battle Horn but apart from some of the word play the visual gags just weren't funny.

Yes, Sir Henry has quite a cult reputation, but I have to agree that I have always found it a difficult film to get into...

Wearysloth's excellent site has a Harold Lang pic:

Aveleyman - Actor

Dilemma (1962) R.2 (Odeon Entertainment). I enjoyed this Bryanston second feature, Peter Halliday is rather good as the hubby with a serious problem to deal with, and special mention for Patricia Burke as the neighbour from hell

What's the print quality like ? I'd like to buy some of these Odeon titles but hear differing opinions of the quality...

I have several of the Odeon titles .... A Prize of Arms, Breakaway, Violent Enemy, Quare Fellow, Forbidden, Don't Talk To Strange Men, Girl In The Headlines, Tomorrow At Ten .... and I am really happy with all of them. They are not re-mastered but I've found all of them to have pretty good picture and sound quality.
