and it is in Black & White, which does not detract, in fact I could not imagine this one in colour.

It's Not Cricket with Basil Radford and Naunton Wayne as 'Bright' and 'Early'. Very funny comedy with the lads on good form in a story featuring Nazis, missing diamonds, chaos in the theatre and, of course, cricket. An appearance from the gorgeous Susan Shaw simply adds to the fun. Recommended.

It's great isn't it? The bits when they are hanging around the office with nothing to do are very funny. Did you spot that Maurice Denham got in a couple of references to one of his Much Binding in the Marsh personae?

Plenty which came free with a newspaper a few weeks ago.

It was terribly ponderous stuff with its theatrical origins all too apparent and its allegory was clumsy.

However some of the performances (although I found Meryl Streep's clipped accent a little grating) were excellent and it all looked wonderfullly grey and austere.

Could that be where the idea for the classic Goons sketch about telling the time came from?

Bluebottle: What's the time Eccles?
Eccles: Just a minute, I've got it written down on a piece of paper. A nice man wrote it down for me. If anyone asks me the time, I show it to them.
Bluebottle: Let me see that paper. It is writted here that it is 8 o'clock. Here what happens if they ask you and it's not 8 o'clock.
Eccles: Then I don't show them the piece of paper!
Bluebottle: But how do you know if it's 8 o'clock?
Eccles: I've got it written down on this piece of paper!
Bluebottle: You should get one of those things my grandpa has. It tells the time, gets you up in the morning, makes you tea.
Eccles: Oh yes, what do you call that?
Bluebottle: My grandma!
Eccles: Here! How does she know what time it is?
Bluebottle: She's got it writted on a piece of paper!

Default Peter Sellers/Maurice Chevalier

Last night I watched the 1929 "Love Parade" with Chevalier. It struck me forcibly that Peter Sellers may have used him as a model for the Clouseau accent. The accent was ridiculous as Chevalier's character wasn't French and his accent was (intentionally humourously I guess) explained by his having lived in Paris and slept with lots of French women. In contrast to his manservant, played by Lupino Lane, who was supposed to be French but had a very English accent!

"I've come a long way you know!" "Equally long way to go back..."

"And Soon The Darkness" with the lovely Pamela Franklin and Michele Dotrice. A nice psycho thriller which manages a decent atmosphere of foreboding despite being set in sunny, rural France. Scripted by Brian Clemens and Terry Nation, it does have a few plot holes, but with nearly every character a suspect it keeps you watching and director Robert Fuest does a marvellous job.

There was a documentary only a few years ago on the Goons, and somehow they had found this old boy, must have been 80, and the show claimed he was the inspiration for Bluebottle: Sellers had gone down the pub for inspiration and bumped into him; he then sent him round to the flat where Spike was writing, and got him to tell Spike that Peter thought that he was a genius; this was the code for "make notes, we're going to use this character". And then this old boy opened his mouth on the programme....and it was Bluebottle; they hadn't exaggerated his voice at all....I was howling.....

Bit of a Bay Window, what??
