Didn't TG have Cushing and Palance in 'The Man Who Collected Poe' ? I didn't think that was too bad. The Burgess Meredith 'Diablo' ending was cheesy though. SMUDGE |

Last night I watched 'The Appointment' (1981) a cracking supernatural film with Edward Woodward.
To be honest, I only watched it because Woody was in it, and I wasn't expecting much; but I was pleasantly surprised. The film starts with a very eerie scene of a schoolgirl walking home through woodland, who disappears; shall we say, in a veryy sudden, un-expected,way. The main plot revolves around Woodward, his wife (Jane Merrow) and their daughter. Woodward is called away on business at the last moment and will therefore miss a concert his daughter is performing in the next day. He spends the first part of the film wracked with guilt working out how to break the news to her. He eventually does and she gives him a very hard time over it. What follows next is; for me; the best part of the film. Without giving too much away, it's a very very creepy night with all of them in bed and various occurrances. Woodward keeps having dreams which intertwine with these occurrances, including a premonition of a car crash. Next day, Woodward sets off early for his business appointment. Again, his journey is intertwined with a number of supernatural occurances. The car crash (mentioned in the IMDB review) is very well done, and done very differently to how most car crashes are done. One comment the IMDB reviewer makes is that nothing is resolved at the end (well, he/she is an American); infact; the viewer is left merely having taken part in a day in the life of this family, without the larger picture of why all of this is happening ever being explained. This is actually what I liked about the film. It really worked for me. All in all, an entertaining and thought provoking 90 minutes. The highlight was definately the night time scenes. Very very creepy. |

See, beat that for sadness Still, at least I'm listening to Willow's Song right now - bet some of you chaps remember that fondly Di |

"Finding Neverland"
I was really looking forward to this, but I was pretty disappointed I'm afraid. Depp's performance was a let down (yes, I know it was raved about by some critics, but that only shows me that I shouldn't trust critics), he mumbled was difficult to hear and the accent wasn't consistent. Kate Winslet yet again played Kate Winslet, and Julie Christie's part was ridiculous. The only bright spots were Dustin Hoffman's brief appearances, and young Freddie (esp at the end of the film). The story line played extremely fast and loose with the truth, but that didn't help the film - the script was reasonably literate, but contained glaring errors - Edwardians did not say "there are the kids", and "how're ya doin'?" Doesn't anyone check these things? A let down, and I thought I would enjoy it rgds Rob |
