Glad you enjoyed it.

FULL METAL JACKET - Stanley Kubrick's powerful study of the Vietnam war as Matthew Modine struggles to come to terms with events around him and how they shape him as a young journalist caught up in the conflict.

I have wanted to sit down and watch this all the way through for quite a while now and I am glad that I finally did. At almost two hours the running time speeds by because the film just keeps you watching. Excellently filmed with good production standards, this is (to me) one of SK's better efforts.

The performance of the film comes from Vincent D'Onofrio as the young recruit with learning difficulties who is mercilessly bullied by the ruthless drill sergeant.

Definitely a film which I would watch again.

Watached a post-Redcap pre-Sweeney John Thaw as Lieutenant Holst in an episode of The Rivals of Sherlock Holmes, the episode also featured Philip Madoc and Catherine Schell. Great fun.

Last night was The Singing Detective. (If anyones read other of my posts...yes I did finally treat myself to the Potter box set). We are up to epi 5 and the boundaries are blurring in that the "heavies" appear in the ward, Mark Finney's and Marlow's ex-wife's speech includes them reading out the punctuation, the first signs of psoriasis appear on 'young Phil'. Great stuff. My wife, who is 8 years younger than me and was just a little too young to watch or be interested in it on its first broadcast, is loving it and suggests that we play it. I thought that I'd be imposing it on her! Tried to limit it a little to have 'deferred gratification'. Bloody brilliant!

Yeah, that's me. Billy Balthorpe, the man with no name.

Night before last actually... The Dark Man a 1951 thriller set along South East Kent. It was a late night showing by ABC. I missed the very beginning so I don't know why the heroine was being stalked by the Dark Man but all enjoyable at 2 a.m. My ignorance in this instance (free shot anyone?) actually added something I think! William Hartnell and Sam Kydd were the only two I recognised at once but both the lead women were lookers (Natasha Parry and Barbara Walker). There was no way the lead man looked as young as he was repeatedly told he was Edward Underdown)! The title role barely spoke - but very effective consequently.

Well after watching Dead Man's Shoes, I decided to try my hand at This is England shown on Film 4 last night.
It started off in a fairly light hearted manner, and progressed to a fairly disturbing violent episode.
Like most Shane Meadows films, it wasn't for the faint hearted.

You're talking about my favourite Britfilm ..... the point about why he was stalking her is very true, I have often thought that it would have been better for him if he'd just buggered off .... he, of course, being the great Maxwell Reed. The other leading actress was Barbara Murray, not Barbara Walker. Max is great as the villain and the film is good fun. I have heard rumours that there may have been a bit of editing for it's US release and that some of the reasons for his stalking behaviour was lost in this way, as the only existing version is apparently the US version.

G'dy Bats,
Yes, well spotted with the mistake. I looked it up on IMBD and everything and then posted the wrong info. Murray not Walker. Murray.. Walker. Blimey. Funny how the brian works! Perhaps it's because she got me pistons a pumping!

As a matter of interest, given that this was a late night free to air showing of The Dark Man, when was the last time it was shown on UK free to air? I don't remember it from my time in the UK.

I've never seen it on TV in the UK either ... my first viewing of the film was on VHS in the 90s.

For more info about Maxwell Reed check this out .....

Kiss of Death which was the Beeb's Bank Holiday thriller.

A specialist police team beset by various personal problems chase a serial killer. Easily the worst thing I've watched this year with a screenplay so bad you wonder if it was meant as a parody.

Danny Dyer gives possibly the worst performance by a professional actor I've ever seen.

Last night I watched the following:-

Once A Jolly Swagman from 1949 starring Dirk Bogarde, Bonar Colleano, Renee Asheron, Bill Owen, Moira Lister, Patric Doonan, Thora Hird, Sid James, Cyril Cusack, Sandra Dorne, James Hayter, Anthony Oliver, Russell Waters and Dudley Jones.

Dirk Bogarde plays Bill Fox a working class guy who becomes a prize speedway star just before and after the Second World War. Some very good performances and use of locations with the speedway being filmed at New Cross.

Following on was Penny & The Pownall Case from 1948 starring Peggy Evans, Diana Dors, Ralph Michael, Christopher Lee, Frederick Piper, Olaf Pooley, Ethel Coleridge, John Lorell, Dennis Vance and Philip Saville.

Peggy Evans plays Penny a fashion model who outsmarts a gang of Nazi supporters based in England. Penny shares a flat with Molly James played by Diana Dors who works for Scotland Yard as a Secretary. A delightful comedy film with an early film role for Christopher Lee who plays a photographer.

Watcehd an episode of Journey To The Unknown- The Killing Bottle, featuring a pre-Doctor series Barry Evans, not one of the best episodes of the series despite the presence of William Marlowe.

They were on a hiding to nothing using the title of a more illustrious film. Stick with a 1946 film with Richard Widmark and the Young Vic

Thats the joke that killed the Music Hall !
