3 more of the Windsor/Walton/Chertsey PUBLIC EYEs - and we were being so good up to now, rationing them....

Mrs. Smudge commented at one point, "You'll enjoy this, won't you?" knowing full well that I was in my element trying to spot recognisable bits of locations from when I lived in the area a long time ago...

Ride the Pink Horse (1947) with Robert Montgomery. An unusual slice of film noir with great atmosphere, an intriguing script and some fine performances. Recommended.

Jingle bells Batman smells ... I heard that at school Daddy.

The Victorian Sex Explorer (one of the less well-known superheroes!) in which Rupert Everett gambols around India and Egypt tracing the saucy fotosteps of famed eroticist Richard Burton.

Although it's a bit amorphous Everett is a tremendously affable guide, equally at home in a convent or a massage parlour. Interesting stuff.

Finally caught up with All Night Long. Worked up a fair head of dramatic tension for a modernised rehash of Othello. Patrick McGoohan superb as the Iago figure and tautly directed by Basil Dearden.

Thats the joke that killed the Music Hall !

Small Hotel (1957) DVD-R. Highly enjoyable light comedy second feature, with excellent performances especially Gordon Harker in his penultimate film role as wily waiter Albert. Irene Handl (always a delight) is the argumentative cook Mrs Gammon, and Marie Lohr an awkward resident. Fine playing too by Janet Munro in her first film role and Billie Whitelaw.

I have just acquired the recent DDM war film set and viewed two last evening
the first was John Mills in We Dive At Dawn (1942) a brilliant film and script. I had seen it many years ago. The home leave scripting was rather like a 'soap' and a bit basic rather than depthful but the action was first class.

The second film was the 1961 Richard Todd Burma exploit The Long and The Short and the Tall. Very trendy and loud for 1961 and not enjoyable to me. I had missed it altogether previously.
I thought that Laurence Harvey was miscast as a nasty Cockney and overacted with it!

He was cast in preference to a young actor who had been a big success in the stage version, but wasn't considered a big enough 'name' for the film - Peter O'Toole!

I watched this a couple of weeks ago and thoroughly enjoyed Laurence Harvey hamming it up, but then I have a soft spot for him

It looks like it was filmed in a corner of Kew Gardens, mind you ...

I'm watching David Nobb's 1991 comedy drama set in a biscuit factory - Rich Tea and Sympathy. Denis Quilley is a Tory industrialist, Patricia Hodge is a Labour councillor, both have eccentric families - can love flourish? Well, obviously. Formulaic but but witty, with many running jokes and repeated situations - I think Nobbs is much better at this sort of thing (see also A Bit of a Do) than sitcoms. Lionel Jeffries gives a droll perfomance as Quilley's sex-starved dad.
