Control 2007. I really enjoyed this Biopic as I'm a fan of the band. Got this for a pressie and was carried along with it. Very good leads from Sam Riley (could be Ian Curtis at some points) and Samantha Morton. Good young cast as band and hangers on but they are subsidary to main story. Looks good in a "closed in" type feel which highlights the insularity of the lives, times and city in which its all set. Recommended viewing but obviously quite a sad film.

Yeah, that's me. Billy Balthorpe, the man with no name.

The 1963 Avengers episode Death A'la Carte, featuring a great cast of unsung British character actors (Robert James, Paul Dawkins, Ken Parry and Gordon Rollings amusingly cast as a Franch chef) - even Coral Atkins turns up in a small role.

Honor Blackman looks absolutely sensational, without the need for black leather (not that I'd have complained), and the performances have that extra spark provided by the adreneline of live performance.

The Edge of the World last night. The Battle of Britain earlier this week. The Battle of the River Plate last weekend.

It's British film week for me.

Wall of Death ... superb post-war crime melodrama featuring excellent performances from Max, Laurence Harvey, Leslie Dwyer and Susan Shaw. Max is a crooked speedway rider who involves young boxer Larry and dancer Susan in his twisted dream of regaining his place as a top rider. Excellent stuff directed by future Bond stalwart Lewis Gilbert.

Jingle bells Batman smells ... I heard that at school Daddy.

Otley (1968) DVD-R. Swinging sixties spoof spy comedy. Well I think that's what writers Clement and La Frenais were aiming for, enjoyable enough as the script is witty and there are amusing moments. We are as puzzled as Tom Courtenay as who to trust, an excellent cast including Leonard Rossiter, Alan Badel, James Villiers and Freddie Jones.

The first two episodes of Charters and Caldicott. Much funnier than I remembered though, of course, full of annoying continuity errors (for example, the real C and C didn't go to the same school, as any fule kno). But some laugh-out-loud moments especially their deadpan-ness at finding a corpse in Caldicott's bedroom and the Scotland Yard johnny getting so drawn into their trivia that he apologises for getting his sense of priorities wrong in questioning them about the corpse rather than a stolen Wisden. Great stuff.

Watched Sharon Tate's last film " The Thirteen Chairs", not brillant but fun and given her tragic murder of historical importance. Should be available more widely.

Last night I watched a short film from 1948 entitled To The Public Danger starring Dermot Walsh, Susan Shaw, Barry Letts, Betty Ann Davies, Roy Plomley, Patricia Hayes, Sam Kydd, Frederick Piper and Patience Rintoul. The film was directed by Terence Fisher. The story is a moralistic tale of the dangers of drink driving. The lovely Susan Shaw is always worth watching.

We've just sat and watched the last half of HOT MILLIONS, the darned good 60s crime comedy made at MGM Borehamwood. Mrs. Smudge commented on the brilliant acting from Maggie Smith and Peter Ustinov - particularly the long scene set in the bedsit when Mags has just lost her job and asks Ustinov to marry her. She was amazed at how they could hold the camera for so long - remarkable, she called it.

Still captivating and excellent stuff - with a great score from Laurie Johnson...

Blind Terror (1971) DVD-R. Rather good horror/thriller from Brian Clemens pen, the tension is built nicely thanks to good direction from Richard Fleischer. Fine performance in a tricky role by Mia Farrow which she plays pretty convincingly, good support from the likes of Robin Bailey, Norman Eshley and Dorothy Alison.

Two episodes of The Persuaders with Tony Curtis and Sir Rog from 1971.
The Old, The New and The Deadly” about a fanatical ex-Nazi trying to get hold of a piece of evidence that proves him guilty of war crimes. Guests include Patrick Troughton, Kenneth J Warren, Derren Nesbitt and, the woman who is now Lady Bath, Anna Gael.

Also, “Chain Of Events” where Danny (Curtis) gets handcuffed to a briefcase by a man he finds dying and finds himself being chased by goodies and baddies – none of whom realise what the case actually does contain! Guests include George Baker and Peter Vaughan.

Curtis and Moore were a fantastic team; they just don’t make good family entertainment like that any more.

DS x.
