The Nine Lives of Tomas Katz (2000)

Just when you think the UK is all rom-coms, cockney gangsters and poor lottery funded comedies you discover a surreal fantasy that has gone largely unnoticed.

Shot in b&w, Katz is the story of a being that appears beside the M25 on the eve of a solar eclipse and proceeds through nine segmented stories as Katz leaps from body to body (cabbie, oap, cabinet minister etc).

The influences are clearly Pete n Duds similarly shambolic Bedazzled or Sellers The Magic Christian, with hints of The Goons and Python. Like Bedazzled it all doesn't hang together well and there's just too many ideas thrown in but it does hold your attention to view the next vignette.

Yep, brings back scary memories of Mr & Mrs.

Was it the one that opened with the line: "From Norwich, it's the quiz of the week". No, that was "Sale of the Century" with Nicholas Parsons.

When I was at school in Norfolk and we watched ITV schools programmes, the Anglia TV knight used to come up at the start of the day's schedule with the music, and there was several minutes of the knight being slowly revolved so that the camera got some good close up shots of the piece from all angles, which showed off the workmanship that went into that knight on horseback and the extended version of the music was mesmerising.

Okay for Sound (1937)

Painfully unfunny Crazy Gang comedy with a plot that could have been written on the back of a postage stamp. Maybe no coincidence that this is the sole writing credit of many of the Crazy Gang.

I'm reminded of the Blackadder 'Chaplin' episode; The Great British Music Hall Tradition consists of two men in braces saying "What's up with you then? What's up with me then? Aye, what's up with you then? I'll tell you what's up with me, I'm right browned off. Right browned off? Aye, right browned off...

" Get on with it!"

They were simpler times back in 1937. People were more easily amused.

Courtesy of Mr Smudge, Conflict of Wings... or The Titfield Thunderbolt for birdwatchers. Yes, the common man and the authorities come into conflict over a stretch of land on the Norfolk Broads - betya can't guess who wins? Amusing rather than funny and John Gregson being incredibly fluffy in comparison to hardfaced Kieron Moore, the real winner is the countryside scenery.

(and Batman Begins was good too - best in the series)

Review from New York Times Online Movie Guide

Quote:
</div><div class='quotemain'>LIVE NOW PAY LATER (1962)

Starring: Liz Fraser, John Gregson, Ian Hendry, Geoffrey Keen, June Ritchie

Albert (Ian Hendry), who is beset by a whole series of problems, all of his own making. In order to advance his career, Albert makes a habit of seducing his female customers to better convince them to buy beyond their means, on credit. Even though he has thus far spawned two progeny with this technique he is not about to change his ways. Albert is also cheating on his girlfriend in the process, and more directly just simply cheating his boss, his real estate agent, and a long list of creditors.
This is a delightful film and Ian Hendry's performace is a bit special. The character he plays 'Albert'
is the template for Michael Caine's 'Alfie'. There is lots of great supporting roles from an excellent cast with a special mention for June Ritchie as his long suffering girlfriend.Plenty of nostalgia provided by the exterior locations.Recomended.

Trivia: In Australia this film was retitled "The Tally Man" - better title

The other winner in Conflict of Wings is the colour photography, which I think is really beautiful!

Viewed The Captain's Paradise (1953) last night, which although not prime Guinness was still entertaining enough. How dear Celia Johnson gushed when unwrapping her present of a vacuum cleaner! Admittedly she was less chuffed later in the film when getting a new sewing machine to fill her leisure hours.

Man on the Run

Neat post-war thriller utilizing Hitch's favoured plot device of the innocent man trying to clear his name. Derek Farr is the army deserter in the wrong place at the wrong time and. Kenneth More makes an early appearance and Laurence Harvey his debut.

<span style="color:#FF0000">The Goose Steps Out</span>.

Ok, but gets too ridiculous to be a classic.

<span style="color:#3366FF">The Ghost of St. Michael's</span> is a much better post <span style="color:#33CC00">Moore/Marriott</span>.
