THE BRIGHTON STRANGLER - Not Brit, I know, but starring British actor John Loder. Found whilst browsing the Radio Times, which recommended it as quite an effective little thriller. For once, they were right...

It must be catching, I've been into 'strangulation' recently, having watched:-

THE BRIGHTON STRANGLER
GRIP OF THE STRANGLER
THE HANDS OF ORLAC

I always thought that the original mum, played by Cicely Courtneidge, must have died, but apparently not. She didn't die until 1980 aged around 87, and her replacement, Doris Hare went on until 2000 aged 95. I think Doris Hare is the most well remembered Butler mum, but having recently seen the first episode again on Bus Night I thought Cicely was better, probably because she was the first, and I'd seen her do stuff with Jack Hulbert and knew of her whereas Doris Hare I'd never heard of! No relation to the Archdeacon, Robertson Hare I suppose?

I watched all the On the Buses series a year or so ago as part of my studies (poor me!) and I too have been wondering why Dame Cecily disappeared after one series. I personally thought she was the weak link and didn't fit with the pesonality and deprived circumstances of the household. Also, she seemed to have problems with her lines and timing which made me wonder whether an age-related illness had caught up with her - she was afterall a redoubtable trouper in her pomp. So, as far as On the Buses is concerned, it's Doris for me.

Something I hadn't appreciated until digging into the series is Anna Karen was something of a pin-up in the early sixties and appeared in some racey titles! What a thought!

I recently got the dvd version with all the bonus features. The Barry Humphries interview was very good, and who'd have thought he was Davy Jones (Monkees) chaperone in the 60's!!

The House of the Arrow

Michael Anderson-directed thriller starring Oskar Homolka (Colonel Stok of the Harry Palmer films) as AEW Mason's French sleuth Inspector Hanaud investigating murder in Dijon (well, Dijon in Elstree).

DOWNFALL 2004
Not a Britmovie ,A german film with subtitles
I have to pick my way through foreign films, most(nearly all german films !) I come across are arty and pretentious but some I hunt down through personal recommendations and Downfall came recommended.
It is in my humble opinion a majestic achievement.Covering the last days of Hitler in his bunker it far superior than the Alec Guiness version(I consider myself a Guiness fan),Bruno Ganz as Hitler is ,to be honest i cant think of a proper superlative to describe his performance ,brilliant ,chilling are inadequate ,The film is in the simplest terms a masterpiece ,vile and enthralling and emotional at every turn .It premiered on MORE4 so it should turn up on channel four soon

Please take the time to watch it if you can.

</div><div class='quotemain'>From IMDB

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy" (1979)
George Smiley has been retired for about a year when he finds a friend from the circus, his old outfit in British Intelligence sitting in his living room. He is taken to the home of an advisor to the Prime Minister on intelligence matters where he finds evidence that one of the men in the senior ranks of his old agency is a Russian spy. Smiley is asked to find him, without official access to any of the files in the Circus or letting on that anyone is under suspicion. With only a few old friends, his own powers of deduction, and secrecy as weapons, Smiley must unearth the spy who turned him out of the Circus

A bit of a cop-out by the secretary who claimed (in the epilogue) to have known nothing of the holocaust.
But a great drama.

Watched a couple of Ronald Howard Sherlock Holmes films - still find it difficult watching anyone other than Rathbone playing Sherlock

Yes, I agree, Frau Junge appearances at the end and beginning (in later life) stating an innocent blinkered view didnt really need to be part of the film ,the story was well told without this, and told from a German perspective for the first time too.

We watched these last summer and quite enjoyed them. Basil R is a cracking Sherlock, but Jeremy Brett (at his best) did give him a run for his money in my book.

...some cult TV, courtesy of EBay. An episode of Granada's 1966 series, THE CORRIDOR PEOPLE. VERY weird, but entertaining nonetheless. Elizabeth Shepherd may not have been ideal casting as the original Emma Peel, but she was certainly suited to the strange villainess Syrie Van Epp....
