Watched this morning

The Lost Hours (1952)

Nothing new in the story, but a nice little Baker/Berman effort recorded during the night from actionmax.
Some nice use of London locations.
from me.

Hello, Fell,

You are absolutely right about the ensemble needed to create a fine film. Without a good script to start with, a director and cinematographer who have guessed right and can carry out their visions, a budget which allows enough breadth and time for the film, post editing not done by a Studio with different priorities, well even the finest actor can't shine. Thanks for the excellent point.

Best,

Barbara

And thanks for expressing my point much better than I actually did

When I thought over it further it did seem that, in the programmes I recalled, the entire cast were trapped in Ronseal at some time or other - both excellent young actors [who'd already proved their worth elsewhere] and somewhat older but less talented actors.

The Snorkel heads overseas to Spain or Italy. An ingenious murderer believes he's committed the perfect crime until a meddlesome teenager sets about exposing him. I was expecting a typically macabre Hammer ending but at the last minute it's wrapped up in more ethical style. The teen is played by child actor Mandy Miller who also played the title role in Ealing's Mandy (1952) - sadly The Snorkel was her final film and at the age of 18 she left the film biz.

Hi, DB7,

Thanks for the note on Mandy Miller. I saw an interview of her commenting on her memories of filming Mandy apparently named after her in real life to make it easier for the child to play the role. Miller was articulate and seemed cordial and well adjusted. Maybe it's good she left show biz early.

Thanks also for starting this thread which has had an amazing 21,000+ views. I always think of the Forum as a friendly village until I'm reminded that it's a teeming metropolis.

Inspector Hornleigh Goes To It (1941) Highly enjoyable fun with Gordon Harker and the great Alastair Sim tackling fifth columnists, Edward Chapman and Wally Patch also appear once more.

Aunt Clara

Margaret Rutherford stars as the sole inheritor of deceased eccentric AE Matthews shady businesses - and proceeds to belie her spinsterly appearance by putting them all to more goodly use.

The always watchable Derek Bond (but he doesn't cut it for me as 'HUNTER') in 'Rogue's Yarn' (1956)
Derek Bond bumps off his missus to be with his bird (grossly overplayed by Nicole Maurey)
He plots a cunning plan to use his boat as an alibi.
Needless to say, things don't work out.
But great fun all the same.

Some nice shots of Shoreham power station under construction.
The power station can be seen in it's completed form in the Butcher's 2nd feature 'Shadow of Fear' (1963)

I watched League of Gentlemen for the first time and thoroughly enjoyed it. I can't understand why I haven't seen it before. The sexual references were quite ahead of their time, and overall it was very well done. I'd like to have seen them get away with it but I had a sneaky suspicion that the colonel using his own car would be a big mistake after all the trouble they'd gone to using stolen vehicles and false plates.

It's ironic that the big £50 million robbery from Securitas this week seems to have been carried out with similar military precision, and I am convinced that serving or recently discharged soldiers carried out the robbery and all the trails of cash and "clues" were a deliberate ploy to get the police running around like headless chickens.

Last night I put on a DVD of Renoir's "The River," not strictly a Brit film but it has Esmond Knight and Nora Swinburne, so it might just squeak by here. It's a beautiful film, slow as the river itself, but wonderful in its own special way. Truth be, I was as fascinated by the special features on the DVD as the movie itself. Scorsese, who pushed to get the film restored, comments on the profound effect the 'foreign" feel of the film and the cinematography had on him as a young boy in love with film even then. The documentary on author Rumer Godden made for BBC's Bookmark series, and beautifully filmed by Sharon Maguire, is a must-see. Also wonderful listens are the commentaries by Renoir and producer Ken McEldowney, a successful florist who decided one day he'd make a film. All in all, amazing film journey on the river.

Best,

Barbara

Man in a suitcase on ITV4 - very good as well.

Incidentally, does anyone know why Department S and Jason King are not available (and haven't been for some time) on DVD?

Am working my way slowly through the BBC Shakespeare box. Couldn't quite get used to Leonard Rossiter as King John - I was expecting him to talk about Miss Jones at any moment. Far worse than this though, like quite a few other actors in the series, was his occasional failure to deliver his lines clearly. I don't expect to have to turn on the subtitles in order to be able to understand a play written in English.

Castle in the Air

Sporadic comedy with a miscast David Tomlinson as the not-very-Scottish Earl of Locharne. With his haunted castle falling around his ears, Tomlinson has the National Coal Board and a wealthy American heiress bidding for his ancestral home - whilst Margaret Rutherford tries to convince him of his rightful place as the King of Scotland!
