Man in a suitcase on ITV4 - very good as well.

Incidentally, does anyone know why Department S and Jason King are not available (and haven't been for some time) on DVD?

Both JASON KING and DEPT S are available in Australia as DVD boxed sets with oodles of nice extras...

Here in the UK NETWORK VIDEO have them scheduled as well. JK will be first IIRC, later this year.

It wasn't sunday and it wasn't raining but It always rains on a sunday, is a fantastic ealing and has jumped straight up there with my other ealing favs. How gritty is this film i dont know how this passed me by for so long,i havn't enjoyed a viewing so much for a while, only one small critism why did they need a model shot when most of the other train scenes were real? but all you have to do is squint for a sec

With some fine help, I've been practicing grabbing still images. This is the first to actually work.

Best,

The wonderful Oliver's Travels with the late, great Alan Bates and fave, Bill Paterson

I hadn't seen it since it was originally screened here and despite how much I enjoyed it first time around, there were parts that I'd forgotten, but that just made it even better the second time. The on-screen chemistry between Alan Bates and Sinead Cusack and their brilliantly written and engagingly delivered verbal exchanges are a real treat. And, of course, it was especially stimulating to see Bill Paterson again as the enigmatic Baxter, aka Aristotle. I can and will watch him...err the series again as many times as I like now!

Hi, Darling,

Great sign-in name, and also one of my favorite Bogarde films. It's wonderful to hear Bill Paterson's name mentioned. Such a fine actor. I much preferred his Traffik over the remake.

Best,

Barbara

Probably the fashion Police decided Jason King was to much for the new millenium and archived the whole print run in a time vault marked 'DANGER Do Not Open for another 1000 years, viewing will seriously distort your fashion sence'

It is cruel to discover one's mediocrity only when it is too late.

oh, how the women swooned over JK in the early 70's.

And thanks Smudge, I knew they were available as Aussie imports (have you seen the price?!)

I guess I'll wait until later in the year

Hello and thank you, Barbara. It's my fave Julie Christie film. As for Bogarde movies, my fave is Sebastian.

Bill Paterson's Traffik is very high on my list of DVDs to watch very soon. We never got the series here in Oz as far as I know, so I've never seen it. As for the movie remake, which I haven't seen either and don't want to...

I've just finished watching The Crow Road, also with Bill, which I really enjoyed. A fine ensemble of excellent, mostly Scottish performers and a very well crafted mystery. Beware those old family secrets...

A Canterbury Tale - again. It never fails to move me.

It was an amazing coincidence as it was just after I'd finished watching it that I had an email confirming the actual place of birth of my mother [she died young in 1969]. I could have made a good guess but this was the proof itself that she had been born in Snodland - just a matter of yards from The Pilgrims' Way. She was a year older than Sheila Sim and served as a WRAF radio operator in Kent during WWII.

I'm sure you can see why I have very personal reasons for being moved by ACT.

Hello, Fell,

I love the mystical connection with the land and history in ACT. And I like its having been shot in black and white, perhaps not a choice then, but were it made now, I'd still vote for b/w to give it that luminescent quality as the characters walk the streets of Canterbury at night. I've said before how much I like ACT, but the first time I actually saw ACT on the big screen, those feelings were truly reinforced.

Thanks for sharing the special story of your mother as a WWII radio operator in Kent. Do you also think of her when you see the opening scenes of June in AMOLAD?

Best,

Barbara

Yes - though I doubt she ever had quite that experience! Photos I have of her during the war show the same hair style - though that wouldn't be a big surprise.

On these photos did you notice any glue in her hair?

Did the character of Forrest Gump evolve from Sergeant Bob Johnson?

PASSPORT TO SHAME (1959)

Half the enjoyment in watching these films is trying to spot future stars in bit parts and walk-ons.

While watching the above spotted Michael Caine and Anne Reid leaving a registry office as a young married couple and Joan Sims manning the phone in a taxi office.

Herbert Lom is at his "menacing foreigner" best and one of his heavies is Denis Shaw.

A magnificently sleazy film.
