As the possessor of a fine old Gallic name both on the forum and off it I am feeling very offended by the ideas expressed in Moor Larkin's post and am considering complaining to the appropriate PC Guardianistas in order that they throw the full force of UK taxpayers' wealth at the perpetrator of this outrage in order to bring him to justice.

Tiger in the Smoke
Thriller set in a murky 50's London during the infamous days of smog. A gang of demobbed squaddies searching for the CO who kept their ill-gotten war booty wander the streets of London in the guise of a street band

QUEST FOR LOVE (1971)

Ralph Thomas' directed adaptation of John Wyndham's RANDOM QUEST. A very nice performance from Joan Collins - one of her best, in fact. A number of character actors seem to appear only fleetingly in the film ; this and the abrupt ending makes me wonder if the film was heavily cut. Anybody have any information on this ?

All in all not a bad little film which pulls off the mix of science fiction and romance pretty well thanks to decent characterisations.

I watched the broadcast of Driving Lessons (2006) last night. An ineffably silly film, I thought, but made watchable by the charmingly diffident portrayal of the young boy by Rupert Grint. Strange, but up 'til now I thought that Rupert Grint was one of the characters in the Harry Potter books.

I watched the other side, 'Born Equal' with Colin Firth and Robert Carlyle. About how childhood, geography, circumstance and how it is handled can impact our lives. Sadly a well meaning film which could have been done better, perhaps all the previews this had spoilt it as you knew what was going to happen.
The actor spot for me was at the very start where Colin Firth's friend gets into a taxi which was driven by one of Michael Apted's 'Seven Up' children. The chap who wanted to be the jockey and then became a film extra and taxi driver.

regards
Freddy

Hogfather, the first live-action attempt at a Terry Pratchett tale...great cast, very faithful to the book...in fact too faithful, the script needed editing to bring the film down to 21/2-3 hours, instead of the nearly four.....the end result a bit slow. Great imagery though, and if you have to have all of a book in a film, it's a great book to do it with...and David Jason was pleasingly unannoying for the first time in decades...

I watched Lost http://www.britmovie.co.uk/genres/th...raphy/070.html a few days ago (Film4 I think) This one had slipped me by before but it's worth a look as it seems like a rollcall of British actors of the 50s and 60s.

Especially with David Farrar's macho cliff-top scramble at the end

I've never seen this one. I was reading something about Lindbergh's move to England (in 1935), and I wonder when LOST was written. This film is 1950 (? I think). Interesting.

Is this a good film? Probably you've seen it before?

I don't know when Lost (1956) was written but it's more like "lonely, childless woman kidnaps baby and pretends to neighbours that it's her own (or a relative's)" which is sadly a timeless story.

It doesn't have any huge stars (David Farrar never quite made that list) but lots of British regulars. It's quite a good story, reasonably well staged and acted.

Wondrous Oblivion (2003) Never heard of it; caught by accident this afternoon on the telly. 1960's-set film about a young Jewish boy living next door to a young West Indian family...there are tensions, but the boy's love of cricket bridges the gap....
Cracking film, not apparently out on DVD, standout performance by Delroy Lindo as the Jamaican father, so why didn't this get any profile at time of release??? It's the best British dramatic film I've seen from the last five years or so...

YOU FOUND IT! I loved this film. I saw it on a trip home a couple of years ago, and I had forgotten its name. THANK YOU!

I think it must have been smothered under the BEND IT LIKE BECKHAM hype machinery ("oh no, another piggy-backed sports film - and this time, it's about cricket!").

It's certainly on my DVD Wish-For-Production prayers list.

After some googling, it's on a list of forthcoming DVD's from Palm Pictures...they have an email notification service if you want to enlist for release news.... The Yellow Brick Road to Vegas - Palm Pictures: Independent Movies, Music, and Love!
