Always a good choice. Enjoyed my own little Norman J. Warren double bill last week, Satan's Slave and Prey, inspired by BBC2's recent and rather unexpected showing of some horror film gems.

Yes, very true - more's the pity that Warren decided to use the weird "I'm a Wind in the Willows reject" snout face when the alien attacks the policeman. There is also something really scary about him when he's dressed up in drag ... you get the strong feeling that her plan to humiliate him might backfire horribly as you should never make fun of predatory aliens with sharp pointy teeth. Actually, it was quite some time since I'd last seen [i]Prey[I/] and I was quite impressed as the film turned out to be much better than I remembered.

CAPTAIN HORATIO HORNBLOWER (1950) on the splendid recent R1 DVD release

Yes.....this is a British film with familiar faces such as Robert Beatty, Terence Morgan, James Robertson Justice and Stanley Baker. All stirring stuff
filmed at Elstree in glorious Technicolor with a magnificent score from
Robert Farnon (which was why I was interested in the film).

Here is Gregory Peck with Lady Barbara [played by Virginia Mayo].....

An episode of Adam Adament Lives! called 'The Village Of Evil'. Oddly enough, at a time when Satanism was still a bit of a no-go area for British Cinema pre-Devil Rides Out, Mr Adament was able to pit his sword-stick against a gaggle of Devil-Worshipers!

Even more oddly, they seemed to be the genuine article and not, say, using it to cloak criminal activities as you'd find in later adventure shows.

Some recently viewed films:

Tomorrow at Ten (1962) R.2 DVD.Excellent cast including Robert Shaw, John Gregson, Kenneth Cope and Alec Clunes with a brief appearance by William Hartnell and Ray Smith. Rather a good film which more than held my attention, an unusual kidnap plot aided by a good script, the acting is good and so is the direction. Although we know what will happen in the end the dramatic tension is well held and one or two unexpected plot developments help. Very good print quality too. 7/10

28 Weeks Later (2007) DVD. I enjoyed the sequel possibly more than the original, first rate entertainment all the way. I like the fact that apart from Robert Carlyle and the chap from Lost the cast was largely unknown (well to me at least). Nice to see Garfield Morgan in a small role too. 8/10

The Flemish Farm (1943) DVD-R. Well handled morale booster which sees Belgian pilot Clifford Evans returning to a Flemish farm, to retrieve his squadrons colours hidden before the German invasion. Based on a true story. 7/10

Edgar Wallace Mystery: The £20,000 Kiss (1962) DVD-R. Another excellent cast Alfred Burke, Michael Goodliffe, Anthony Newlands, Richard Thorp and Dawn Addams. Sir Michael Goodliffe is in bother after a quick snog with lovely Dawn Addams, can private eye Thorp help or will it be left to Inspector Alfred Burke to sort matters out. Blackmail and murder two of Edgar's favourite topics here in this briskly directed second feature. I love these so 7/10.

I recently watched 'Notes on a Scandal' - excellent movie. Judi Dench was fantastic - of course.

Caught a couple of recent feted thrillers; London to Brighton and Red Road. LtB was very good and the influence of earlier films dealing with prostitution and gangsters like Mona Lisa. Red Road could have been a better film under more dynamic direction but the pacing is painfully slow.

The Simpsons Movie.
I am/was (in recents years its been deteriorating) a fan but watched this wary that most attempts to stretch a 30 minute comedy format to feature length end in failure. And this is another. To satirise environmental issues doesn't offer much material for Homer to work with and it lacks the edgy humour of Team America.

The animation is top notch and the pig nearly steals the film. But one to watch on dvd.

THE BROWNING VERSION - Terence Rattigan shows us a fragile world inside a lesser public school. populated by damaged and brittle characters in this drama of human foibles and failings.

There's really very little to like about the principals ; Michael Redgrave and Jean Kent are trapped in a loveless marriage wherein he has become weaker and she harder and more cruel as time passes. She is openly having an affair with Nigel Patrick's fellow master, who is all hail-fellow-well met to the 'unsuspecting' spouse.

Fortunately Redgrave's emotional armour is cracked by a small act of kindness on which the whole film pivots. Redgrave regains his dignity, Patrick dregs up the last shreds of decency and Kent's character is more or less destroyed by her own cruelty. But still one is left with the feeling that overall this is a very cold film...

GUMSHOE - Finally got round to watching this one properly, thanks to BBC's SUMMER OF BRITISH FILM. This is really quite an unsatisfying film - mainly because it never seems to decide what it wants to be. Its it spoof, homage, or just straight thriller ? With it's strung out plot and somewhat plodding pace, I suspect that the film-makers themselves were more confused than their audience. Certainly not Finney's finest hour.

GOLDFINGER - again thanks to SUMMER OF BRITISH FILM - on the big screen and digitally remastered. It was a joy to see this one again ; the moment where all the pieces of the classic BOND formula fell into place !

Old Bill & Son (1941) DVD-R. Cartoon character from WWI “Old Bill” is brought to life here (Moreland Graham) in this cheap and cheerful propaganda piece. An interesting historical viewable but not a particularly good film, all the ingredients are here “Put That Light Out” on the home front and “Old Bill” is perplexed when sheets of corrugated iron arrive with instructions for his Anderson shelter. Son Johnny Mills is sent to France, OB managed to tag along despite being too old for active service but Col. Roland Culver assists. We have a song for the troops from Renee Houston, and OB and Johnny Mills capture some Hun. No doubt at the time it served its purpose well though 6/10.
