I watched a triple bill of UK 1950's films last night. The first film was The Limping Man (1953) with Lloyd Bridges, Moira Lister, Alan Wheatley, Leslie Phillips & Bruce Beeby. The second film was the first class thriller The Yellow Balloon (1953) with Andrew Ray, William Sylvester, Kathleen Ryan, Kenneth More and Bernard Lee. Finally, the amusing comedy film Where There's A Will (1955) with Leslie Dwyer, Kathleen Harrison, George Cole, Thelma Ruby, Dandy Nichols & Edward Woodward.

c/o BBC's Summer of British Film, THE GORGON (1964) An effective mid-range entry in the Hammer catalogue. Re-teaming Cushing and Lee under the guiding hand of the great Terence Fisher, this is a nice little piece - again rarely seen on TV these days. Wonderful re-worked sets from Bernard Robinson, lit with nice autumnal touches by Michael Reed and supported by an excellent James Bernard score. OK, so the snake wig isn't what it might have been, but I don't think it detracts that much from the overall feel of the film. Excellent performance from Barbara Shelley in her role as the confused and confined central character.

Followed by an episode of DANGER MAN 'Deadline' by way of a small personal tribute to director Peter Graham Scott and Production Supervisor Aida Young, both of whom went on to bigger things with Hammer, and both of whom we have sadly lost in the last few weeks...

Last night I watched 'I, Monster' - WOW. That is the first time I have truely enjoyed the tale of 'Dr Jekyl and Mr Hyde'... so much more subtle than I had expected.

Bourne Ultimatum and 1408 on the silver screen. I'm still working my way through the Sky-plused BSoF and current going through Obsession, Gumshoe and Tiger Bay.

So many films, so little time.

Did you see the recent BBC series, Jekyll by Steven Moffatt?

Last night I watched a good UK B Movie from 1957 called Account Rendered starring Griffith Jones, Honor Blackman, Ursula Howells, John van Eyssen and Ewen Solon. Wish they'd put more of these films on TV or Sky.

Same here Joe - used to be great in the 80s when they used all these films as filler for the wee small hours, before the advent of rip-you-off dial in quiz TV...

Yeps. I saw Moffatt's 'Jekyll'... It was entertaining, but I find 'I, Monster' vastly preferable. I think it was the subtlety and the fact the transformation and results were played down rather than over the top (which is so often the case with the story) that really pleased me.

Moffatt's 'Jekyll' was OK, indeed the best thing I've seen the BBC do in a long time... but the lion teeth were used way too often, and like so much of the Beeb's recent output it played like a well-done hip student effort rather than expert TV.

Home at Seven directed by and starring the great Ralph Richardson. A very nicely done character study/whodunnit with Ralph playing it straight and showing show nice touches from behind the camera.

Bats.
