Saw the film Breaking and Entering last night. Thought with it's cast, Juliet Binoche, Ray Winston and Jude Law it would be a goodie. Started well but sort of lost it's way about half way through and I started to lose interest.

Cone of Silence (1960) DVD-R. Excellent drama concerning a new passenger aircraft in which Captain Bernard Lee is involved in a crash on take-off. Top notch cast of welcome faces including Andre Morell, Michael Craig, Peter Cushing, Gordon Jackson and Charles Tingwell. Using the problems with the real Comet aircraft as the idea for the story, it’s well acted and well worth seeing I think. Bernard Lee especially good I thought. 7/10

One of my favourite Hay films - the first one I ever saw - and it has the classic "let's work out where we are" routine between the three leads

Hammer's 'Rasputin, The Mad Monk' - wow, what a performance by Christopher Lee.

Last night I watched Nothing But The Night (1972) starring Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing, Diana Dors, Georgia Brown, Gwyneth Strong and Keith Barron. It's always great to watch Christopher Lee & Peter Cushing acting together. I liked Diana Dors performance very much.

Philby, Burgess and Maclean (1977)
Shown as part of BBC 4's "Hidden Lives season" about gay life.
A very good dramatisation of the final days of Philby, Burgess & Maclean. Especially the events leading up to the defection on Burgess & Maclean. With Derek Jacobi as Guy Burgess but with Anthony Bate in the lead role as Kim Philby.

The MI6/SIS inquisitor in chief (Skardon, played by David Markham) did remind me of George Smiley. I wonder if Smiley was based on a real character?

This too may have been the first time shown here, since most of these films didn't make nation-wide releases originally.

Margaret Rutherford. I had no idea!

And unlike most of these films, this one was an almost complete unknown to the audience, yet it got a deserved standing ovation which, perhaps, isn't that uncommon here as I think about it. Applause is common, standing ovations are more rare.

I'd bet this one has enough votes to carry over into the Sat-Sun matinee.
I watched the Pickwick DVD release of 'The Runaway Bus' and must admit that the picture quality was poor.
Quite an enjoyable film to watch. It gave the feel of being a television production instead that of a film. Amongst an excellent cast I thought that Frankie Howerd was excellent.

Anyone know why the telephone box scene with Frankie was cut? Was that the very first scene he is seen in, just before he climbs through that office window?
Were there any other scenes deleted from the DVD release?
Makes me feel a little shortchanged to know that the DVD release has pieces missing.

Dave.

Flambards on DVD, if anyone remembers it . Very evocative of Edwardian England, with the class divisions, hidebound families and yet the first dawnings of the new technologies and the new politics. Christine McKenna is just lovely in the starring role, but seemed to do little more acting than this.

Bit of a Bay Window, what??

I bought the boxed set of Flambards for Mrs Bat last Xmas. It is a really good series with an interesting cast. Good ol' Eddie Judd and 'flavour of the month' heart throb Steven Grives among them.. Christine McKenna (I believe) retired from acting and became a producer.

I watched Breakaway (1955), another pre-Rog Saint clone from Berman/Baker with Tom Conway as the Saint-like 'Duke' Martin. A good cast list of stalwarts including Alexander Gauge, Larry Taylor, Michael Balfour, Freddie Mills and Arthur Lowe. Starring with Conway is the lovely Honor Blackman. The story is pretty routine and there's not much going on in the way of innovative direction but it's an OK time-filler with some good location photography. Conway looks a little fragile for all the action stuff but in general does OK with a performance similar to those he gave in The Falcon series.

To see how it should be done check out Baker/Berman's similar Blackout with some bloke called Maxwell Reed.

Default Time Without Pity

Time Without Pity (1957). An interesting film based on one of Emlyn Williams murder plays 'Someone Waiting' and directed by Joseph Losey. Michael Redgrave plays a convincing drunk, the father of a young man (Alec MacGowan) due to hang within 24 hours for the murder of his girlfriend. Leo McKern plays a motor industry tycoon (Britain still had those in the 50s) and Peter Cushing the condemned man's solicitor. Ann Todd and Joan Plowright have over the top supporting roles. An interesting vignette of 50s Britain in luscious B&W. Watch out for Dickie Henderson playing a Windmill Theatre- type compere/comedian leering at leggy chorus girls. A nice twist at the end - well worth watching.

Last night I watched a 1963 UK B Movie called Night Train To Paris. It stars a very young Leslie Nielsen, Alizia Gur, Dorinda Stevens, Hugh Latimer and Eric Pohlmann, playing a baddie. A very good low budget suspense film.

Inspector Hornleigh with Gordon Harker, Alastair Sim and Hugh Williams. Good old fashioned murder mystery with Harker and Sim on good form as Hornleigh and his sidekick Sgt Bingham. The print I watched wasn't the best but it didn't spoil the enjoyment of watching two of Britain's best actors having a great time.

Gypo, with Paul McGann and Rula Lenska and Pauline whatshername(?) from Father Ted. Strange film where not a great deal happens but keeps you watching. The story is set round Margate and the influx of workers from the ex estern block (Czech in this case) and the non acceptance by many locals. I was left feeling that the format used, three different versions of the same story was a good idea but the story was too thin for it to be of much effect.
It seemed the film was made on a very tight budget to the extent that some shots looked more like the sort of film you get with your camcorder. I'm not criticising it for that, I felt that added to the atmosphere of it.
