Women steals priceless object from Elstree backlot 2 bob antique shop. She then escapes in a convertable twodoor Triumph Herald. Swaps getaway car for a chauffeur driven Rolls pauseing only to sidestep an onion seller on his bike. Jumps into the back of the Roller and tells the driver in her sexy foreign accent "take me to London Airport". Cut to great titles and score for "THE BARON". Well it arrived early, 30 episodes from Network and up to thier usual top quality. Only four weeks to go before "GIDEONS WAY" hits the mat. Pinch me somebody I think I'v died and gone to Heaven.

Now your talking H!! This is on the "to get list" for sure. Network doing a fine job as you say. I thought the renovation job on "Strange Report" was amazing.

Hackett - have the NETWORK prints been restored ? I bought the Umbrella set for the better extras, but could always be tempted to 'upgrade' in the sales as Umbrella used untreated masters...

Just finished watching some positively contrasting stuff....

THE PLANK and IT'S YOUR MOVE - this is the THAMES TV 1979 re-make of PLANK ; still VERY funny, but just made me realise how many of the comedy greats are now gorn !

IT'S YOUR MOVE - not such a classic, but didn't Sylvia Syms have great legs ? [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif[/img]

Then :
TABLE MANNERS - the first part of Alan Ayckbourn's NORMAN CONQUESTS trilogy. I remember watching it as a sprog, but simply as a piece of entertainment. See a lot more in it now ; sharply observed reality that there's no such thing as a happy family ! [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif[/img]

Have to watch it again soon as Mrs. came in part way through and got into it as well... [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blink.gif[/img]

San Ferry Ann (1966)
A near-silent comedy from the A Home of Your Own Producers.

Reminiscent of Innocents in Paris, a group of British tourists take the Calais ferry over to France and get involved in various misadventures.

Graham Stark, Babs Windsor, Joan Sims, David Lodge, Rodney Bewes, Wilfred Brambell and Ron Moody all star.

Millions

Danny Boyle's family film with an element of fantasy focusing on two young brothers who come into possession of £250,000 by chance. The elder boy realises the need to keep a low profile and use the cash sparingly but his impressionable younger brother gives the money away to every worthy cause he encounters. Soon the crook who originally stole the money arrives on the scene looking for his lost loot and with the pound soon be replaced by the euro the swag must be exchanged quickly without arousing suspicion.

Danny Boyle puts a moralistic CFF spin on Shallow Grave and carries it off in whimsical fashion with his usual stylish direction. The closing Africa scene maybe pushed the saintly tone a tad too far.

Medium Cool BBC2

This is very similar to Punishment Park, filmed in a documentary style. It's not lost any of it's power in the ensuing years, filmed during the 1968 Democratic Convention and it captures the chaos of the time perfectly. Robert Forster is superb and reminds me of Robert Ryan in The Set-Up(it could be the boxing angle)

I must also mention the psych-out scene complete with Frank Zappa music, very funny.

B-feature starring Jimmy Hanley as an ex-con who goes undercover to infilltrate a gang of crooks. Final scenes of London cabbies hunting down the crooks recalls Carry On Cabby [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif[/img]

Dr. Terror's House Of Horrors (1964)

I found myself just fancying another peek at this Amicus portmanteau after chatting here about From Beyond The Grave.

I know it backwards, but I still enjoy it, particularly 'Werewolf' and the marvellous Lutyens score... [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/thumbsup.gif[/img]

This delight was followed by two vintage episodes of Please Sir ! [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif[/img]

I watched the swinging 60s "Smashing Time" with Rita Tushingham this weekend. I haven't seen this film in many years and really enjoyed it. That put me in a totally 60s mood so I watched "Here we go the Mulberry bush" again. I just love this film. The scenes where he watches Judy Geeson from afar, there is a little bit of acoustic guitar which is incredibly melancholy, pure magic. Like many people here I never get tired of this film.

A few dodgy shots that were obviously models in the water tank.
A few others where people were having fun just out of camera-shot throwing buckets of water over the actors.
But a damned fine film.

It's the old 'Brewsters Millions' story, with some stalwart support from Renee Houston, John Slater & Colin Gordon.

Good fun but doesn't seem to be a well remembered film. [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/no.gif[/img]


<span style="color:red">The Big Money</span> starring Ian Carmichael.

Not in the same league as 'Lucky Jim' etc but not bad.

I must say that I LOVE Smashing Time - it's probably one of my favourite films. Rita Tushingham is just great. Imagine if she were a star now - they'd have hacked her nose down and straightened her teeth, but I think that's part of her charm! I think I might watch it tonight ... me and a nice glass of red wine ....
