...a couple more stories from the THRILLER box set ; WHO KILLED LAMB ? A fairly well constructed blackmail story, made brilliant by the usual 100% performance by Sir Stanley Baker. SIGN IT DEATH - Psycho secretary Francesca Annis slices-and-dices her way through the opposition in the hope of marrying her boss, scenery and syllable-chewing Patrick Allen.

All in all, good clean family Christmas fun !

I bought the original Thriller boxed set (before the mega one)..........and found myself falling asleep, so I gave up.
Is it worth persevering?
I only bought it because it was in the sales.

Just got a batch of Australian release DVD's so started off with Sapphire - the Dearden and Relph race thriller. Paul Massie was a bit wooden (whatever happened to him?) but there were solid performances from two of my favourite players Nigel Patrick and Yvonne Mitchell. Earl Cameron made his character very believable as well. Enjoyable but a little dated now. It seemed a bit heavy handed in places and I think they managed a better blend of social comment and drama in Victim a few years later. Nice to get a good print to replace my rather worn VHS tape though.

Just got my DVD of this. Did you notice how so many of the chapters start at either doors opening or doorways ? Makes me wonder if this was a deliberate part of the film's structure ; changing scenes/action via all those doors.....?

RENTADICK (1972) The Ned Sherrin/David Frost produced manic detective farce.

Made at the tail end of the time where anything produced by this set (Python's Cleese and Chapman were uncredited scriptwiters, asking to have their names removed) was considered funny. This clearly is not the case.

Only mildly amusing at it's best (and this just in parts) it seeks to save itself by throwing in guest cameos from the likes of Milligan & Bentine, who were presumably doing favours for friends. Thinly plotted and lacking direction, the whole thing is a bit of a mess and wastes some good talent.

An overindulged project memorable now only for some early glimpses of artistes such as Richard Beckinsale & Penny Keith, and some (probably long-demolished) views of old Watford.

Mind you, for the surrealists amongst us there is Kenneth Cope dressed up as a giant mouse....

Could be - some parts of the film seem a little unpolished shall we say. I watched it again last night and this struck me too (probably because I was using the chapter menu a lot). Something else struck me as well. The use of colour in some of the interiors is odd and I wonder whether the sets were designed for a black and white film. The family home interiors are very drab and uniform. The most noticable example of this are the scenes in the shop where Yvonne Mitchell works. ALL the shelved goods are white and shades of grey. I mean to say, grey advertising signs for Kellogs?? Very odd.

Nil by Mouth (1997)
I never caught this one at the cinema when it first came out and they showed it on TV the other day. I finally watched the tape last night. Cor blimey guv'nor, it's a bit harrowing. Brilliant performances from the Cockney mafia led by Ray Winstone & Kathy Burke.

I did feel a bit annoyed at the cop-out when Ray (the character played by Ray was also called Ray) blamed it all on his Dad not showing him any affection.

The Shipping News....ok, not British, but a semi-British cast... Subject matter a bit harrowing at times, but a very good cast performing well on the whole...Cate Blanchett barely recognisable as a stereotyped tart, Kevin Spacey being AN ACTOR again, Judi Dench showing how less is more, and a very effective performance(s) from the little girls playing Bunny...usually twins, here they seem to have used triplets !! Rhys Ifans less annoying than usual, even with a dodgy RP accent.
It all ended as cosily as only a Hollywood film can....the two misfits get off, the drowned man isn't, the little girl knows mum is dead (Trust me, that is a good thing here) and the old house is blown away in truly symbolic fashion.
Only the real Newfoundlanders could possibly be unhappy, at being portrayed as being a bunch of hopeless alcoholic incestuous bedhopping fuckwits. But then they don't get to vote for film awards.

Bit of a Bay Window, what??

For the last 30 years, I have been trying to find out about a film that has stuck in my mind for this long. I saw it on telly in the afternoon. It was an old black and white British film. it started off with father and young son playing in a park. The father subsequently gets accused of a murder he did not commit. His aliby was that he saw the person he was supposed to have murdered leaving a port by a ship. He said the ship was called the SS Chester. however there was no such ship. He went to jail for about 20 yers and came out a very different, bitter man. His son wanted to help prove his innocence and found out that the ship was called "SS Chichester" and the first 3 letters had been obscured thus invalidating his fathers aliby. Ring any bells?? Does any body know the film??

Beyond This Place 1959. Van Johnson and Jean Kent amongst others.

On Mrs. Smudge's request, a double bill of Sir Stanley Baker's films to see us into the New Year :

BLIND DATE : Joseph Losey's tight little murder mystery with excellet central performances from Sir Stan, Hardy Kruger and Micheline Presle at it's core.

HELL IS A CITY : One of Sir Stan's and Val Guest's finest - a gritty thriller with a great cast and a very good performance from John Crawford as the villain, Starling. Baker's Martineau benefits from having the character details well filled in.

Perfect timing, this bill ended at three minutes to midnight ; followed in by an episode of Jon Finch's 60s TV Sci-Fi COUNTERSTRIKE.

Had a touch of the Edgar’s last night. A couple of “Edgar Wallace Mysteries” The Sinister Man & Backfire! plus Edgar Lustgarten introducing a “Scotland Yard” Bullet From The Past, I was quite surprised to see that location shooting took place on this one with Guildford and Godalming railway stations shown plus what looked to me to be Godalming town centre. Interesting to see a comparatively young Ballard “The Major” Berkeley too

I always thought that the original mum, played by Cicely Courtneidge, must have died, but apparently not. She didn't die until 1980 aged around 87, and her replacement, Doris Hare went on until 2000 aged 95. I think Doris Hare is the most well remembered Butler mum, but having recently seen the first episode again on Bus Night I thought Cicely was better, probably because she was the first, and I'd seen her do stuff with Jack Hulbert and knew of her whereas Doris Hare I'd never heard of! No relation to the Archdeacon, Robertson Hare I suppose?

Doris Hare came up through the ranks of musicals and light comedy on the stage with none other than (Sir) John Mills. She did (IIRC) do some films, starting as far back as the early 30s. She was another notable Mum in Mike Sarne's/Rita Tushingham's A PLACE TO GO.

Her IMDb entry http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0362791/

Just finished watching Pat Jackson’s superb Western Approaches, terrific filmmaking and what good performances from the cast of genuine sea dogs. Incredibly brave men, I would have been absolutely terrified under those conditions in the Atlantic. I really recommend this one.

Is that on the Imperial War Museum DVD with the extra short A Seaman's Story?
It is a great film. Jack Cardiff was stuck in that boat for ages.
