</div><div class='quotemain'>The Best of Friends (1991)

From Amazon:
A nun, a playwright, a museum curator-they made an unlikely trio, but the brilliant insights and stinging wit which they each possessed make them a force to be reckoned with! Sir John Gielgud, Dame Wendy Hiller and Patrick McGoohan star in this Masterpiece Theatre production about one of the most extraordinary friendships of the twentieth century.
In 1924, legendary Irish playwright, George Bernard Shaw [McGoohan], was introduced to Dame Laurentia McLachlan [Hiller], a Benedictine nun at the Stanbrook Abbey in Worcestershire, England. Along with their mutual friend, Sydney Cockerell [Gielgud], director of Fitzwilliam Museum Cambridge, the trio enjoyed twenty-five years of letters, literary debate and laughter.
The sparkling dialogue, adapted from the trio's journals and other writings, comes alive through the talents of Gielgud, Hiller and McGoohan. Relive their vigorous discussions on everything from the existence of God.to the finer points of tango dancing. This brilliantly literate, warm-hearted film captures the unique nature of an amazing friendship.
I really enjoyed this, the very wittty literate letters between these three friends is presented to you through the beautiful speaking voices and crystal clear diction of John Geilguld and Wendy Hillier.Reccomended

Mystery of Edgar Wallace “Man At The Carlton Tower” Not one of the best MoEW’s even though it has Sir Alfred Burke in the cast, as the “Mystery” is rather obvious, still enjoyable though and always nice to see AB and Lee Montague

Did the character of Forrest Gump evolve from Sergeant Bob Johnson?

No, Forrest Gump evolved from the village idiot played by Esmond Knight.

Hear, hear !

One of Mr. McGoohan's better pieces from his later career. A joy to watch, as you say...

Nice one, Harby

A shame really, as Sir Alf's EWs are none of the best, but his performaces really lift them.
If you're minted, BTW, treat yourself!

Despite having the film on video and seen it countless times, I shall tune into BBC2 this afternoon for The Square Peg

Finally made it to the final episode of the BBC TV show "Survivors" (S03) (1977) “Power”. Series one and two were fine but this final series was really hard going, not helped by one of the leading characters only appearing in a few episodes and the others seeking him out, constantly just missing him which meant frequent exchanges with folk met on route who invariably replied with “Oh yes Greg Preston you just missed him he is off to Swaffham”. Not too difficult to see why there was no series four!

A great show at the start, riveting television. but yes, they had begun to run out ideas by series 3.

According to the Wikipedia entry for the series:
# Ian McCulloch (Greg Preston) wrote a fourth season of Survivors during the 1990's to try and get the programme back on television. BBC Scotland were interested in the idea but did not approve of the idea of an uninfected African nation colonising Britain.
# Denis Lill (Charles Vaughan) and Ian McCulloch fell out with each other during the filming of the second season, leading to the departure of McCulloch's character. McCulloch was apparently unhappy that a new male lead had been added to the show, when he had built up a strong character during the first season.
# Abby Grant's search for Peter was concluded in the Terry Nation novelisation of the series.

Yes indeed Steve the first two series were excellent and a few episodes from series three were of the same quality, “Mad Dog” for example. Interviews with former cast members were included on the DVD sets and Ian McCulloch is tactful, but the feeling gleaned was that series three was the “Charles Vaughan” show. Pity they changed the emphasis for the third series because it really does not work well at all.

'The World's Fastest Indian' - a really good NZ-US feel-good movie, with Tony Hopkins (In a bit of a return to form IMHO) as a veteran motorcyclist dreaming of speed records on Bonneville Salt Flats...imagine a cross between The Straight Story and No Limit - no ukelele's though. Highly recommended. Did I say it was a true story??
Also 'Good Night and Good Luck' - Clooney acts and directs in B&W, but gives the show over to David Strathairn as Ed. Murrow. Class. Sound quality was horrible, so don't do as I did and watch it the Showcase, St Philips, Bristol....go to that 'cinema near you' instead.

Bit of a Bay Window, what??

Champagne Charlie (1944, Ealing, Cavalcanti) - very enjoyable, starring Tommy Trinder, Stanley Holloway, Betty Warren (she was wonderful) and Jean Kent. Really made me want to get into my time machine and visit a mid Victorian music hall with all the wonderful songs and acts!

Recommended (if you can ignore the rather soppy love sub plot)

A Hammer thriller double bill: The House Across the Lake (1954) and The Snorkel (1958)

To get a better sense of Daniel Craig's range as an actor, I'm working my way through his films. Last night I watched "Love is the Devil: Study for a Portrait of Francis Bacon." (1998) The film gives us an unvarnished look at the twisted relationships and personality of the British painter Francis Bacon, superbly played by Derek Jacobi, and his East End lover George Dyers, played equally convincingly by Craig. Abused as a boy, Bacon then gives it back to the world as a disconnected, cold, and callous adult, mirrored also in his fragmented paintings. Kudos to Director/writer John Maybury and cinematographer John Mathieson whose scenes appeared like some of Bacon's own distorted paintings. An excellent film: you'll find yourself unexpectedly sympathetic for an unexpected choice.

My conclusion? Daniel Craig takes chances as an actor and doesn't rely on looks or sex. I was impressed.

Still working my way through the Thriller series. I decided to go out of sequence and put on the Stanley Baker one called Who Killed Lamb? starring Stanley Baker, Derek Francis and a small role for Peter Sallis. Very good, and without looking it up, possibly one of Stanley Baker's last TV roles.

One thing I've noticed with most of these stories when the woman works out quite logically that something is amiss; her friend is missing, or the letters she found point to something sinister going on in the village, her boss is up to no good etc their respective boyfriends or husbands never ever believe them, and they get quite ratty with their wife/girlfriend if they are determined to pursue the mystery further.

At the end when she's proved right all along the husband/boyfriend (if still alive) are all over them like a rash, and just for once I'd like to see the woman say "Bollocks to you mate, you never believed me when I told all this so you can just piss off and find yourself a thick bimbo to brow beat you horrible patronising b*****d!"
