Default British Film Forever

At least you managed to stay awake to see them. Of this Season so far I've managed 10 mins of The Pumpkin Eater, about 40 mins of The Leather Boys, fell asleep before This Sporting Life started, but did wake up to see the last 15 mins. Not only am I bleary eyed at work the next day, I've developed a crick in my neck from sleeping on the sofa with my head at a right angle.
Is the BBC taking this season of film seriously? If so why are they relegating these films to the wee hours on a week day? Surely they could have found, say, a 9pm slot on BBC4 which is, after all, meant to be their Arts and Documentary channel. It would have been a great opportunity for older viewers to revisit these films and younger viewers to discover them.

Wish I'd never thrown the old VCR away, but then I could never set the timer

I saw a screener of Bourne Ultimatum last night.

Not normally my kind of film but wow. It starts at a hell of a pace and stays there. Felt positively knackered at the end. Haven't seen the other two films in the series yet but will now. Thoroughly enjoyed it. I can recommend a visit to the piccies to see it if you like action stuff.

We intended to just see FALLEN IDOL and, while I'd seen it before on DVD, I still think the big-screen/full-audience experience made it much better. More tense.

Then we decided to see that THIRD MAN film - the one that's occasionally mentioned here. That too is a pretty OK effort from obviously some not-too-bad cast and crew.

So today, the zither is taken from its case and I have asked for a renewal on my lessons - which start about the same time, year in and year out. And certainly as a result of watching that movie.

After my fingertips get bruised enough, I complain and hubby takes over, and pretty soon, the shadows are darkened and I'm in some Viennese cafe with a husky red wine and buttering sweet dark bread, thanking the Good Lord that in my fantasies, no one smokes up the place.

I went to see Bourne Ultimatum last night. It's a gripping, fast moving, white knuckle ride, edge of your seat movie. Highly recommended.

LAWRENCE OF ARABIA. Not a bad little film.

In its remake, I could see how Hugh Grant could bring some oomph to his role (he'd be one of the charging camels, right? "On to Akaba-!")...

Or since the Americans won that war, maybe Jim Carrey would be Larry. "Ventura Of Arabia" has a nice ring to it. Or if they insist on a blond, Dana Carvey? David Spade? I'm sure all of these replacements would give a whole new depth to the meaning of "remake".

Default Twentyfour Seven

Twenty Four Seven 1997

A bleak(is there any other in films!) council estate is the setting for a story a heavy slice of social realism,Bob Hoskins tries to inspire a group of young men to escape and dream of something better through a boxing club
Made in black and white and I would guess with Shane Meadows films partly semi autobiographical
Its engaging to watch and I could relate to the situations the boys have as their lives.
Not the best Meadows film I have seen but he certainly knows how to tell a story from a perspective I can understand
and respect.

I watched 'Cul de Sac'... Wonderful performance by Donald Pleasance in an off beat early Roman Polanski black comedy.

Thanks for the reminder, not seen it for years will get hold of a copy.

Should not mention it here I suppose but I watched The Bourne Ultimatum last night (DVD thanks heavens rather than the Cinema). Personally I found it inferior to the two previous films, and the running about got a tad wearing I thought. Still quite interesting for all that though.

have to agree this is not Shane Meadows best film. Had this been the first one of his I'd seen I think I'd wonder what all the fuss was about.

BECKET (c/o BBC Summer of British Film)

Excellent and engrossing film, with a brilliant central performance by Richard Burton, more than ably supported by Peter O'Toole. Mind you, O'Toole has to have the screen to himself to come to the fore ; when the two are together Burton effortlessly outshines him. No flash, no poses, just pure acting talent.

I hadn't realised how stunning Sian Phillips had looked when she was younger. She was lovely in this, making me regret that she had so very few scenes.

Amazing Shepperton built sets too. Why have I taken so long to discover this film...?

The sets turn up again in at least one film - 'Masque of Red Death'

They were vast and expensive, so I am not surprised. I bet they came in and out of the scene dock with some regularity. Will have to keep my eyes peeled for similar re-occurences...
