Crackerjack.

Gentleman thief Tom Walls robs from the rich and give to the poor in typical Gainsborough vehicle.

Lawrence Of Arabia - 1962

Impressive movie, well acted, directed and edited, 10/10 for sure, but lacks a certain something which means it's a classic movie but not a favourite (if that makes sense).

The Last Horror Movie

A low-budget serial killer video diary in the vein of Man Bites Dog. The charismatic lead's Patrick Bateman-esque ego-trip quickly becomes grating and the horror is as subtle as a sledgehammer without suspense; but Blair Witch cultdom may await. There's a twist in the tale similar to Ringu but it fails miserably to convey the same sense of fear. (the director was responsible for Wicker Man homage Darklands)

NORTH WEST FRONTIER - 1959

A great (if under-rated) ripping yarn. Kenneth More's wonderful (as always!) and is backed by an on-form Herbert Lom and Wilfred Hyde White. One of thoses movies I could watch again and again. :)

All Televison last night...

Courtesy of Network Video

2 Episodes of GEORGE AND THE DRAGON, starring Sid James & Peggy Mount. Both Christmas themed episodes which rounded off season 1 (why do we always watch these things out of season ? )

The Royal Letter ; in which Peggy receives a reply from 'Prince Philip' for her charming Christmas card. Courtesy of Sid, of course !

Merry Christmas ; in which everybody goes off for a wonderful family Christmas, and (of course) all end up, one-by-one back at the Colonel's house.

From a very different world of sit coms, this one always prompts the wife to ask, "But did anything HAPPEN ?" I rest my case on the fact that where today would you have the word, "allegorical" used in a sitcom ?

===

Then Episode One of THE POWER GAME ; 'The New Boy'. I got hooked on this when CH 4 showed it way back in the early 90s. High-powered boardroom drama, still interesting, albeit mostly due to the performance of the late, great Patrick Wymark.

I've just watched THE SUNDOWNERS on BBC2. I'm not sure if it is 'properly' British, but it does have an excellent British supporting cast. I enjoyed it so much that I wished I taped it. :)

I think it'd qualify as British (or a UK/Australian co-production) by most criteria.
It's available on video from many American retailers like Amazon.com

Midnight Menace (1937)

A similar theme to some of the Bulldog Drummond films; fascist armament manufacturers require a new war to create a market for their wares, so plan to scupper a London disarmament conference and launch an anonymous midnight attack on London using drone planes. An investigate journalist has already been murdered and now a newspaper cartoonist is hot in the trail of the underground movement.

The story has some prophetic interest as a few years later pilot-less planes would attack London in the form of the V1.

THREE CROOKED MEN

A Danzigers (Yes, I know ! ) film starring Gordon Jackson, a young Sarah Lawson and Warren Mitchell, who excelled at this time at playing beleaguered little men.

Routine crime thriller ; a gang use Jackson's store next door to bore into the back of the safe. Mitchell - the little bank clerk - tries to help and is captured by the gang also. He and Jackson are subsequently accused of the crime.

Whilst on bail they both turn detective and track down one of the men.

A co-scripted credit by Brian Clemens with a couple of very odd narrative jumps, presumably due to the well known budgetary restraints of Messrs Edward and Harrly Lee Danziger :

i.e. they capture one of the gang and hold him in the back of the shop CUT TO customers walking into the shop to see the successful crime fighter (Jackson) and the case has obviously been solved....

HEY! HEY! USA! - 1938

A minor Will Hay movie but still very funny (I prefer this to his WHERE'S THERE'S A WILL, which is another of less movies).

He had a good rapport with Edgar Kennedy in this (though Edgar was over-the-top at times)

Another Danziger Bros film.

Night Train for Inverness (1960) takes a similar approach to the frequently shown Lewis Gilbert film Emergency Call but diabetes fails to generate the same interest as a rare blood donor required for a young girl.

There must be LOADS of additions waiting for this thread now that we're back online !

THE DEVIL'S MEN : Minor 70s Horror made in Greece, starring Peter Cushing and featuring Luan Peters (of FAWLTY TOWERS fame.) A curious film which (I presume) survives on the back of it's star's genre reputation. Very strange !

Also watched another DD Video product ; the interview with Wanda Ventham, on their release of THE BLOOD BEAST TERROR. She has very good recall of the stuff she's done and was very entertaining.

Yesterday's Enemy.

Stage-bound Hammer war drama in a similar vein to The Long, and the Short and the Tall. A departure from the usual war film as the Brits perpetrate a war crime only for the tables to be turned on them by the circling Japanese troops.
