War Stories
Part of the War Stories season on BBC4. A documentary looking at how the Second World War was depicted on film. From forgotten gems like Frieda to classics like Ice Cold in Alex, how accurate were the films of wartime? - This was very good it also managed a very cool looking time line chart in between articles showing film posters and advertisements. Great stuff! Simon |

I watched Ill met by Moonlight1957 a Powell and Pressburger film set in Crete. The story of a combined British/partisan operation to kidknap a German General and escort him to British held Cairo, as a publicity stunt to embarass the Nazis.
It was good fun but rather disappointing on the whole even with a seemingly good plot set against the breathtaking mountainous scenery of Crete. Dirk Bogard stars. Christopher Lee makes a brief appearance as a German Officer who gets shot in a dentist's surgery in the local town. |

Given that I was just back from Elstree and the weather was so shabby, a lot of this weekend was spent under the duvet watching all sorts of odds and ends on the bedroom box:
THE DOUBLE DECKERS - Various episodes, looking out for Elstree location footage. IT'S NOT CRICKET - 'cos I fancied a bit of old B&W. Radford and Wayne reprise a thinly veiled Charters and Caldicot in this tale of a missing Nazi and a stolen diamond hidden in a cricket ball. A pleasant enough film - fairly lightweight - and greatly enhanced by the presence of the lovely Susan Shaw. Nice bits of villainy from Maurice Denham and Alan Wheatley. PORT OF ESCAPE - Starring Googie Withers, John McCallum and Bill Kerr. A rather basic plot, but still somehow this keeps your attention. Mrs. Smudge was well impressed with Kerr's dramatic talent as she only ever associated him with Tony Hancock. THE LEOPARD MAN - A Val Lewton/Jacques Tourneur thriller with something of the atmosphere of Cat People at the beginning but - sadly - not in the same league. These were interspersed with episodes of NO HIDING PLACE and the B&W Emma Peel AVENGERS. Listening to the rain lash down this was by far the better way of spending the weekend... Smudge |

It would be nice to have a war-film season showing all the British classics from the 1940s. Regards, HG |

Revisited........... A Boy,a Girl and a Bike
Pleasant comedy of the trials and tribulations of a cycling club, the acting honours go to many of the young members of the cast, a scallywag Anthony Newley,a flirty Diana Dors mixing with the wrong crowd (again!) ,and best of all a splendid Honor Blackman as a ever so feisty Yorkshire lass good fun |
