They were not all released in cinemas by Rank but I think they are all titles aquired over the years by Granada.

Daily Mail: Free 16 DVD set of British WW2 films

How does the quality of the DAILY MAIL A Matter Of Life And Death
compare with the UK commercial release ? The latter should have a better 'bit rate', as the MAIL DVD has
2 films on one side of a DVD....

The DAILY MAIL free DVD series:

Today: A Matter Of Life And Death AND
The Heroes of Telemark

Sunday: Return from the River Kwai

Monday: Reach For The Sky

Then......(the order is not given in advance - the DAILY MAIL want you to go out to WH Smith or Tescos every day to find out....)
OR ......You can send for the lot for £6.99 (+ 8 coupons from different days newspapers)

In Which We Serve
Above Us The Waves
The Battle Of The River Plate (Powell and Pressburger)
Ill Met By Moonlight (Powell and Pressburger)
Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (Powell and Pressburger)
The Long and the short and the Tall
Escape to Athena
I was Monty's Double
Went the Day Well
All Quiet on the Western Front (1978)
Tunes of Glory (not a war film....but excellent movie)
Aces High
In Which We Serve

I just couldn't bring myself to buy a copy of the Daily Mail. Not even to get a free DVD of AMOLAD. I do have some standards

I'll just have to make do with the various copies of the other 4 DVDs I've got
Plus all the copies on video

Clearly not a proper fan.........

On a less fatuous note, I was intrigued when I read the dvd notelet for A Matter of Life and Death:

It's night over Europe........... A crippled Lancaster Bomber struggles home across the English Channel. All the crew are dead save for the young pilot desperately scanning the radio waves for signs of life. His prayers are answered. June, a young radio operator picks up his signal........

It has a certain prima-facie similarity to the initial plot-set-up for
"Armchair Theatre" The Man Out There (1961)
A Russian astronaut trapped in space in a faulty rocket, has five hours to live when his radio makes contact with Marie, a hunter's wife also trapped, in a blizzard swept area of Canada.

The author of the 1961 piece seems to have written very little but I wonder if he was a fan of David Niven, in his younger days.....

Standing on the shoulders of giants and all that.............

Or is it just a duff description.........

I've seen it in some amazing places and with some very interesting and very nice people.
I've seen it so many times I know every line and every shot by heart. I've researched it so much I know how they did all the tricks. But it still moves me to tears every time I see it.

But there are limits, I just won't buy the Daily Hate Mail

It's been used in a few SF stories as well, and was also the basis (sort of) for the Tony Hancock "The Radio Ham" sketch.

But the rest of them tend to make that communication their whole story whereas Pressburger just used it as the start of his

I'm quite looking forward to watching it. I'm certain I watched it when I was younger (quite liked David Niven, back in the day) but a lot of it possibly went over my head then. It's been on telly recently but never at a convenient time and I try not to video any more because it just gets silly, trying to remember what's on which tape........

Return from the River Kwai was two hours of my life I couldn't get back the first time I watched it. I'm sorry but I really hate movies that re-use footage from other films, too me that is just taking the pee and this one virutally has a whole sequence of it from another movie at the end. (The Sea Wolves, the ship sinking and exploding)

Footage from Tora, Tora, Tora was also used in the Battle of Midway in the same way, I just find that really anoying. To be honest I think making a weak sequel to such a classic was a mistake in any event.

I had a real result...popped in to my local newsagents to find that the Mail had sold out...but that someone had left their mag/DVD package behind. Took it to the desk....where I was invited to take it!! I get the DVD (Like Steve, one of many copies) and yet fail to swell the coffers of the Hated Rag...
My only concern is that we may, in the forum, be inundated by Mail readers....so many to convert, so little time...

The war footage from the original Four Feathers has been used in countless films

That won't make people realise how terrible it is or make it go away
