Where's the fun in not griping about it? Anyway, it's The Independent which gives away dull foreign films, usually French.

it sounds incredibly hypocritical to in one sentence slag the paper off ,then in the next sentence go " ooh but you must buy it on saturday cos theres a great war film in it " then wheel out some chestnuts about buying a porno mag to hide it in ,the films in question have been on telly enough times or if you were that desperate you could get a copy for a couple of £ on ebay ,to quote a mail columnist " you couldnt make it up " ps spare a thought for me if i have to buy the guardian ,its such a big paper i have to buy two mucky books !

It's a near certainty that if there is an outrageous story being quoted it will have come from that indescribable rag - that's why we have to talk about it.

It certainly isn't hypocritical to say one won't on any account buy the Daily Hate - whatever film they might be trying to bribe people with.

Actually, can we take this discussion back to the Daily Mail thread, where it really belongs, as it's getting a bit off-topic here?

I've had some great films from The Guardian - Orlando, Let Him Have It, Battleship Potemkin, High Hopes, The Last Emperor to name a few. And we've adorned various offices with their free posters (especially popular was the one that showed how to tell the sheep from the goats). Not so keen on the little orange booklets they seem so fond of now (as do the Indie - often of the same subjects on the same week).

And no, I have never bought the Daily Mail to get a free dvd even when it's been something I'd quite like. Though Tunes of Glory is quite tempting...

reckon that the bean counters at the daily hate as you call it will be happy listening to the sound of cash tills kerchinging ,whatever you think of their politics ,you cant have much in the way of principles if youll buy a newspaper you hate because of a relic of a war film being given away ,bet you could buy a copy for £3.99 or something on hmvs website ,my principles are worth more than that ,which goes back to my original point some of you must be closet mail fans

What in Gods name are you talking about? Please calm down a bit. Britmovie is the friendliest movie forum on the web, and you really are getting a bit shouty.

You've made your point, now move on and talk about something else.

Well people aren't really recommending the paper, they're recommending the DVD giveaway.

I've got it sussed - my uncle's a Mail reader who has no interest in the DVDs.

Sorted.

maybe a better way to put things is this ,i did hear somewhere because of falling sales across the board ,newspapers are switching to the giveaway film or music cd to drum up sales ,one of the most successful has been the mail ,unwittingly if your buying the paper because of the film ,your nonetheless putting money in their coffers ,what a brilliant marketing strategy isnt it ? even if you genuinely dislike the newspaper you still buy it !because of an old film theyve negotiated the rights for ,imagine you didnt like weetabix for example but you still went out and bought and eat weetabix and told your friends too as well simply because of the power of marketing !, the mail will go from strength to strength on that basis ,perhaps the above replys were my way of pointing out that your all being duped ,the fact that the newspaper seems to be reviled yet at the same time reccomended , only i didnt get my point across well ,
