Today Monday April 21st " All Quiet on the Western Front".

The Mail has become so popular they've hiked the price to 50p, still a bargain.

Got my latest dvd today, a bit cheeky but clever of the Mail to put up the price in the middle of a successful promotion. This is a reasonable collection with probably only one turkey in it

This is a misunderstanding of why newspapers give away DVDs. Newspapers are actually losing money when they give away a DVD. What they expect, is that some of the people who do not normally buy the paper will buy it for the DVD and will then decide that they like the paper and will buy it permanently thereafter. It's basically a promotional loss-leader.

But at least that one had a decent story
And are they giving away the 1979 TV version or the 1930 film?

1979 version ... it's not too bad but pales next to the superb original.

I wish I had claws.

Obviously there is some meaning behind your wink which has passed me by .... this is another version of Remarque's excellent book, a remake if you wish.

The production qualities are superb and there are good performances from Borgnine, Pleasance, Holm and Richard Thomas. However, it lacks the atmosphere and 'feel' of the original. It is well worth watching and definitely a cut above the average TV movie..

A new version/interpretation/remake in 3-D planned for 2009.

I wish I had claws.

Why? And especially, Why 3D?
So that you can see the soldiers charging towards you with fixed bayonets? Or so that you can see the body parts flying through the air in glorious 3D?

I think the word "Gimmick" springs to mind

I have a feeling 3D cinema might be the thing of the future, the technology is there to even convert original 2D movies for 3D projection. It might be seen as the thing that is going to drag people away from their blue ray home cinemas! There has been a bit of speculation and talk by the likes of Spielberg, Jackson and Coppola on the subject. I would agree though that a grizzly depiction of WW1 trenches is not something I would particularly want to view in 3D!

Sorry, didn't mean it to sound touchy .... I just wondered if I had missed a part of the thread.
