The Daily Mail and The Sun and others have plundered the "Carry On" series, and some of the Ealing back catalogue - but if you had to think of other things for newspapers to give away -what would you choose. (Who knows - someone may read this and get the idea.)
My thoughts Great British TV comedies - mostly from the 1970s and include... Man About The House, Please Sir, Love Thy Neighbour, For Love Of Ada, On The Buses (and its sequels), - any more? "Till Death Us Do part" and "Up Pompeii" have already been released as freebies so I didn't include them. Great British Films Of The 60s- include The Family Way, Accident, Just Like A Woman, The Servant, I'm All Right Jack, Heavens Above, Take A Girl Like You, The Fast Lady, King And Country, etc I thought about Hammer films but of course too many of them are 15 and 18 certificates which would make them difficult to give away and the same goes for an idea about "The Great British Sex Comedy". Any other ideas? Last edited by Mr Cosmo; 16-04-2008 at 03:49 PM. Reason: Spelling |

For newspaper freebie DVDs there are several factors:
Sales of the existing commercial DVD have to be stagnant...... The DVD has to have already been rated by the BBFC, to avoid this additional fee [of well over £1000]..... The film has to be of sufficicient interest (stars/director/themes) to persude casual buyers to purchase the paper - this is the whole point of the exercise... Different papers require different types of films based on their readership.... No 18 certificate films, or lower rated films with excessive bad language/sex/violence.... Daily Mail and DT have more 'over 60' readers for whom the old stars like Dirk Bogarde have appeal ..... the film must niot have been previously issued as a freebie...... US studios do not generally do deals for freebies........ Only Guardian and Independent readers can read quickly, so sub-titles are out.... |

Julian, I just love that line about sub-titles.
Maybe they should actually include sub-titles that explain the plot as it goes along, to help the non-Guardian "thickies"!

Norman Wisdom's name should simply not appear in this thread.
These movies stand up very well and are WAY above the level of the trash that usually accompanes DVD giveaways.... I bought the box set and have to say Wisdom's films in the main are still packed with great laughs. How can you not like the support as well, with the likes of Margaret Rutherford, Jerry Desmonde, Hattie Jacques, Thora Hird, leslie Phillips etc? Talent and quality never go out of fashion.....
