Think you have most of my favourites already, but might I give a passing nod to UNEARTHLY STRANGER, for it's different concept, atmosphere and crisp and interesting photography. Would THE MIND BENDERS hit in this category, as I quite like that as well ? A bit wordy maybe, but of merit nonetheless. Tough call to come up with the ultimate out of these, between DAY THE EARTH CAUGHT FIRE and QUATERMASS II (IMHO). The death of Broadhead in the latter is still quite stunning, no matter how many times I see it... SMUDGE |

Ealing films quite simply put are quintessentially English and portray a bygone perfect cosy world. I just love to put one on and bury my head in one and forget about this horrid selfish world we live in today. My favorites are Titfield Thunderbolt and Ladykillers(The ending is a real classic). Was really surprised Barnacle Bill(A.K.A. All at sea) got no votes attall as admittedly is a bit weird, but once you can get your head around the plot of a pier being run as a ship Its quite funny and Alec Guinness is terrific. Also another bonus is the pier is Hunstantons old pier which was destroyed in storms and some historic shots of the old pier, Which incidently is not far from myself. If anyone wishes to watch this lost classic it is regularly shown on TCM (you can find it by looking on TCM website and looking on listings). Worth taping or DVDing as it is on ussually early hours of morning.
Shame they dont make films like this anymore eh! Last edited by rachris; 28-10-2006 at 09:47 AM.. Reason: missed alternative title |

I end up watching LAVENDER HILL MOB the most often. It's one of those background pop-in films that I'll start up with little intention of watching attentively, but soon enough, all those other foolish distractions are long forgotten - ringing phones, frantic neighbors and kitchen fires. I do know a certain Eiffel Tower statuette on my shelf would be among the few trinkets I'd collect as the firemen hauled me out. "Lady, c'mon - uh, what are you watchin'? Oh yes, I love this film - GUYS, C'MERE... she's even got popcorn..."

I am trying to find some graphics to use as a DVD-label for my backup copy for A RUN FOR YOUR MONEY (1965, Ealing, the Welsh miners win a London trip).
Does anyone know a site that carries something specific? If not, I'll resort to a screen-capture, not always my favorite but better than my other hammer & chisel option. Last edited by ChristineCB; 01-11-2006 at 12:14 PM.. |
