This appears to be a real winner, I've watched a brief 3 mins on YouTube and it looks and sounds great.
YouTube - No Blade Of Grass Clip 1 John Christopher has anyone seen it? if so, what did you think? the reason I ask is, there's a copy knocking around on Ebay that I might snap up for 3 or 4 quid. I hate watching vids on YouTube, I'd much rather watch it on the big screen. I watched The Last Train (1999) a few months ago and thought it was awesome, hopefully this will be just as good. |

It's one of those 70s glimpses of a dystopian future, the sort of 'apocalypse-on-your-doorstep' type of film. As the raggedy band make their way up the country it reminds me a bit of the Thams TV instalment of the Quatermass saga. For the type of film I'd say that it was easily watchable...

It is a rather good film. Nigel Davenport is great. It is grim and hard edged - in kepping with the tone of the book, although it does play fast and loose with the details.
Unfortunately, it is hard to get hold of. I bought a copy on pirate DVD recently from Ebay. It was of an 80's release and was perfectly watchable - but... It was a re-edited bastardized version of the film, not the one director Cornel Wilde wanted to be seen. The original version has some very striking technical florishes which are missing with this one. There were flash-forwards and freeze-frames thrown in all over the place - adding to a nightmarish quality. Missing here. Sequences involving a family in a remote cottage who end up eating their dog has been trimmed out altogether. The available version appears to have lost about 15 minutes overall, is more linear in structure and less experimental. Like I said, perfectly watchable and a great little survival horror SF flick. But not the film I remember from seeing on TV 25 years ago! And then there's the question of Nigel D's eyepatch! Not as truly terrifying or as coldly cynical about human nature as the book.
