Default Colour films

Can anyone out there enlighten me as to the actual cost of making a pre-sixties British film in colour as opposed to black and white? I have read many times that the cost of colour film was so prohibitive that it was just a 'no go' even for the most expensively made costume epics. This reason I find a little contradictary when one thinks of the many really dreadful 'B' films they did manage to afford to make in colour during this period.

In hind sight it was probably a blessing in disguise as it is hard to imagine such classics as 'Oliver Twist' and 'Hobson's Choice' being produced in glorious technicolour!

Lindsay Anderson's If was filmed in black & white and colour and I remember the announcer saying after the film that the makers ran out of money to make it all in colour.
