Technology, whilst an advantage, has no superiority over exprience, which ellen Macarthur has in abundance, along with a love for the sea to match her respect for it,and most important of all, determination, drive and guts. I for one would not like to climb a mast in high seas (I wouldn't like to climb one over a duck pond).
Sadly, she has had some knocking lately from critics, but I am proud of her and in amidst of overpaid, foul mouthed footballers (who are "heroes" because they chase a ball for ninety minutes),she is a star and true Brit.
Other than that - Hi,everybody!

Well said that man! I fully agree Marky, especially the apposite comparison with footballers. Why do we, in this country, have a tendency to knock people who have done staggeringly well and performed wonderful acts of bravery that take great courage?

You have to find your avatar picture and load it again into this new board.
You also have to reset some other personal details like where you are, favourite film etc.

Using all that technology does seem to take all the "fun" out of it somehow....

Sir Francis Chichester, Robin Knox-Johnson and Alec Rose all did it in WOODEN boats with no sat-nav, mp3 players, globe-link mobile phones, computers, web-cams or T.V screens....and Nigel Tetley was the first non-stop in a wooden trimaran. Edward Allcard did it in a wooden ketch only 26 foot long, and Tom Blackwell did it in the largest wooden boat EVER (59 foot)

None of these chaps launched a range of clothing as soon as they got back, or a series of limited edition prints.

None of these guys had diesel engines either.

But for REAL pioneering British 'get up and go' we should look no further than Chay Blythe, who not only went round the globe "the wrong way" (against the wind) in a boat with no sat nav etc, but took with him a barometer and sextant that he borrowed from his local pub. Now THAT should be what it's all about....

Threep

Personally I think the REAL bravery here is going out in a boat made by B&Q.....

They suggested on The News Quiz on Radio 4 that it was called B&Q because it always had a sail (sale) on! OK, it worked better on the radio.

Even a ZX Spectrum is quite high technology compared to some computers I can remember! I'm all in favour of technological advances.

I bet even you would be glad of all the technological help you can get if you were in such a frail looking craft out in the Southern Ocean where the wind whips all the way around the bottom of the world with no land to slow it down and the waves can easily be as high as 3 storey buildings - and that's when there's not a big storm blowing!

One very impressive documentary that gives a good idea of what it's like is Maiden Voyage when Tracy Edwards led an all female crew in the 1990 Whitbread Round the World Race.

Captain James Cook - now THERE was a sailor
He didn't know if he would EVER return from his journeys.
Right around the globe in a wooden boat no bigger than the Manly ferry.
Thanks to him we now have the world's best cricket team, BBQ's and Foster's Lager.
"Say no more ! "

Havn't I seen those somewhere before?
At my age i can't quite remember what they're called but i'd remember if i saw them in the flesh.
It's on the tip of my tongue but i can't put my hands on it.
Just need something to "jog" my memory.
Although they could have your eyes out!

Dave.
