I saw Grant Gee's documentary Joy Division the other night at Manchester Corner Housed and was greatly impressed. One of the best British documentaries on any subject I've seen in a long while and certainly among the best I've ever seen with a musical subject. I have to admit a degree of personal interest as my brother-in-law makes an appearance ( well, two actually ) but that aspect notwithstanding its a marvellous portrait of the band and the city that spawned them. Perhaps not quite as important as the film-makers would like to think it is but excellent nonetheless, with some wonderful and very rare archive footage and even a hypnotised Ian Curtis speaking on tape. The remaining band members come across in a laudably likeable and down-to-earth manner and it was great to see drummer Stephen Morrise taking part in a post-film Q & A session with writer Jon Savage. Has anyone else seen it and if so what were your reactions?

Caught the end a of programme about it on Film24 (Sky Ch. 158) last night and see that it's repeated tonight at 9:35 followed by the one about Control, so will hopefully see it all this time. Morris usually comes across well in interviews but he didn't look very well in the clip that I saw last night. Good to see Tony Wilson included in there which must have been one of his last interviews.

I've seen it twice and its great to find a documentary about rock music that isn't afraid to treat its subject matter with some degree of seriousness or intellect. Jon Savage has pulled together some great interviews and knows his stuff, Grant Gee has added another great doc to his CV. Puts some of the recent BBC stuff to shame..the ones on Scottish Rock and Factory Records were particuarly poor. Badly researched and peddling the same old stories over and over.

Really looking forward to seeing this, hope it's as good as The Future is Unwritten ( the documentary about Joe Strummer that came out last year ).
