There was some German (?) film/Documentary I saw years ago about a WW2 Austrian (?) 'Conchie' who refused to fight and the film ended with him being guillotined Nazi style.......yuk!

.....You couldn't hear it, if they were shooting at me with howitzers!

The Blue Max was a good movie, with some great aerial scenes.

The Dawn Patrol was Hollywood but featured David Niven in one of his better roles.

Slightly pre-WW1 but Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines is pretty good by any standard

I really want to see A Very Long Engagement now! I love WWI films. Regeneration is incredibly haunting, and I think the scene with Sassoon's ghostly dead friends gathering round his bed has to be one of the saddest things ever...unless you compare it to Journey's End, which just makes me cry every time

Oh What A Lovely War I've only ever seen parts of but it looked good. Strange juxtapositions of deadly serious subject matter and frivolity; pretty effective.

And, though it's not really a film, I don't think - is it?? - but Blackadder Goes Forth: 'Goodbye-ee' is brilliant. It makes you howl with laughter all the way through then cuts you dead at the end with shock. Strange how for a comedy, that episode won some kind of award for most poignant/sad ending, something like that. I liked that - I don't think any WWI film should treat the subject matter entirely frivolously!

I'm excited by the thought of The Battle of The Somme coming out on DVD! As I haven't a VHS player I can only watch DVDs so I've not been able to see the video. Only a clip years ago in history class, I think - the famous clip with the exhausted soldier carrying his wounded comrade over his shoulder. If it comes out on DVD that would be amazing.

Heck, I couldn't say which for me is the *best* WWI film, there are too many equally amazing ones! But I think Journey's End comes close...

I haven't posted before and and haven't figured out the quote thing, but someone mentioned "Blackadder goes forth" earlier on. That was based on Journey's End. In addition to the 1930 film, there is a 1988 TV version that is supposed to be pretty good and close to the original play. Has anyone seen that? I've read the play and I know it's been revived recently and it is pretty tragic. Of course, I can't get access to the film versions . . .

As much as you shouldn't like remakes I bought a copy on DVD of Lew Grade's 'All Quiet On The Western Front' starring Richard Thomas.

Although it doesn't have the atmosphere or emotional depth of the orginal, I think the remake is a pretty good film in it's own right.

King and Country is a very haunting WWI film - it portrays all the pointlessness of the War and the unbelievable conditions of the troops. Tom Courtney is the arch anti-hero and plays the part with great innocence.

Not British, but I'm surprised that "La Grande Illusion" hasn't got a mention. One of the greatest of WW1 films
