Thumbs down British celluloid disasters

Which films do people regard as a British celluloid 'train wreck'? Not those films with understandably poor values due to a limited budget, but ones with reputable directors/cast that resulted in not a flawed finished product but an unmitigated disaster that is barely watchable.

Two that spring to mind are 70s comedies with extremely talented comic actors given far too much leeway and self-indulgence. One is Cook and Moore's comic adaptation of Hound of the Baskervilles, which has only one redeeming feature in yet another performance of the one-legged routine. Another is Milligan and Sellers in The Great McGonagall, which may have been amusing were it condensed into a sketch, is painfully unfunny as a 90 minute feature. You have to wonder what they were thinking and how were they allowed to get this nonsense on screen.

The Morecambe and Wise movies. Just not suited to the movie length format.

I'm as mad as hell and I'm not gonna take it anymore!

I don't know if it counts as 'British' but the Steve Coogan remake 'Around the world in eighty days' is quite stunningly bad.

I have not seen it but Three and Out seemed to be dire.According to IMD it cost an estimated $8million to make and in its first and only week on release took about 189 thousand.
Historic disasters include Caesar and Cleopatra(Pascal)and London Town.

I quite like them - not up to their best BBCTV work agreed but The Intelligence Men and That Riviera Touch still raise a smile (but then I am a strange person )

In the comedy class I would put the Cannon and Ball debacle The Boys in Blue. Val Guest you should have known better - trying to shoe-horn those talentless comics into an old Will Hay vehicle was never going to work. Hay, Moffat and Marriot were a unique and special teaming never to be repeated. I can remember C & B being interviewed when the film was being made saying that unlike Eric and Ern they would be working with puka material and a fine director so it couldn't fail. But it wasn't the material that was wrong it was C & B. A salutory lesson.

I seem to recall that Morons from Outer Space directed by Mel Smith was a bit of a disaster

But there was Nekkid Ralph and a teddy bears' picnic. What more could anyone want? I realise I might be alone here but I didn't think it was nearly as bad as everyone decided it would be before they saw it.

Ferry to Hong Kong - Ranks attempt to crack the international market. Fails on every level despite talent and serious money involved. Kenneth More was to have played the lead but dropped out (read the script ?) - smart man. Why Rank thought it was going to bring them into the big league is a mystery looking at it - Curt Jurgens was a name but hardly in the major league and Orson Welles was hardly at his zenith by then (his accent is perculiar and his voice might have been dubbed). Misfires in every way.

Lewis Gilbert admitted directing - a brave man
