Smile New film set in Manchester

A mate of mine is trying to identify a film just released on DVD. It is a gangster film, set in Manchester,it has got "15" certificate, and the cover of the DVD has the back of a skidhead. Any ideas?

Do you mean skinhead, or is this another youth cult I don't know about?

I wish I had claws.

The film is feature-length documentary by ‘investigative journalist’ Donal MacIntyre. The subject is Manchester crime boss Dominic Noonan. It was first shown on television.

Start every day with a smile and get it over with.

A very interesting documentary it was too. If you have even a vague interest in true crime material.

When I first read your enquiry I for one minute thought that a friend of mine had at last obtained a release/distribution for his gangster film "BAD LADS". It stars Tim Paley. But alas no, not yet anyway. I have seen the BBC doc, and it is quite good.

BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR...YOU MAY GET IT!

I also saw Macintyre's Underworld: Gangster (2004) and it was fascinating although, at times, I found it hard to believe it was 'for real'. It was originally screened, I believe, four days after Dominic Noonan's brother, Desmond, was stabbed to death.
Dominic Noonan has a son but is openly gay.

There are parallels with the Krays and I'm sorry to say that, like them, the Noonans' story is compulsive viewing.

Christ! I feel, living in Manchester, that I should see this documentary, if only so I know which areas not to take a night bus through!

Default A Very British Gangster

This movie is on cinemas now in France, I heard it's a fiction/documentary about a real brit mob, have you heard of it ?
As I just like mob's stotries, like M.Scorsese's "Goodfelas", "Casino"or HBO Serie "The Sopranos" (with wonderfull J.Gandolfini), "OZ" is harder stuff but very good and new too.....

It's not exactly fiction, it's a documentary about a very real British gangster. Dominic Noonan and his brother Desmond "Dessi" Noonan who used to operate mainly in the Manchester area. Dominic is currently serving time in prison for the unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition. Dessie was killed in 2005.

since I've just had my second car nicked in under four months I'm fast coming to the conclusion its best to reside somehwere other than Manc. Still I don't think I can pin this one on the Noonans....

At least the Krays used to sort out petty thieves
They would either beat them up or take a cut or what they "earned"
