Default Dick Turpin ?

There's obviously been quite a bit done on Dick Turpin - Tom Mix, Victor McLaglen, a Disney, a TV series and I'm sure much more. Any Britmovie recommendations or warnings ?

The TV series was a teatime family version but was well enough made with directors like Charles Chriton working on it and guest stars like Donald Pleasance.

The Disney version again has good production values and a great support cast and was from the same era as their Dr Syn film. Like the TV series DT is portrayed as a Robin Hood figure redistributing wealth to the deserving.

Thats the joke that killed the Music Hall !

The Disney version with Patrick McGoohan is very good and it's a shame it's not had an R2 DVD release. Didn't Hammer also venture into this territory? The film title escapes me.

It is from the same source material but the the characters name was changed after a battle with Disney. Have never seen Clegg but would like to. The other despite a good cast is Disneyfied. Given the publics appettite for costume drama it is a pity that there hasn't been another incarnation of Dr Syn. I guess there hasn't because Disney have a stranglehold on the rights.

You're correct...Richard O'sullivan did play Dick Turpin in the late '70's ....there were 2 or 3 series.....they have been released on DVD by Network.

I've got the DVD's but havn't watched them all yet, though what I have watched so far I have enjoyed.

Default Richard O'Sullivan Series

I'm thinking of buying my youngest (soon to be 12) a DVD, do any of you have an opinion as to which of the three series might be best. My instinct would be Series 1 or Seies 2. Any input much appreciated.

I would go with the first series and see how he likes it.

I was about 12 or 13 when the series first aired and and thoroughly enjoyed it...I'm not sure if some 12 year olds these days would appreciate it as much as I did then.

You can pick it up here for £7.00..

the tv series was written by richard carpenter who did catweazle, the ghosts of motley hall, and others. he is the best writer for children's tv i know of, and all his works are suitable for adults too. he combines depth, humour, and meaning. can't recommend him highly enough. catweazle is his greatest achievement, and benefits incalculably from geoffrey bayldon's acting. there is a very active fan club. good luck!
