Starting next Saturday in the DAILY MAIL a season of Micheal caine films starting with THE WHISTLEBLOWER on Saturday and HALF MOON STREET on Sunday.

I see they are also giving away: The Holcroft Covenant, Water, The Romantic Englishwoman and Without a Clue. There should be a full list soon.

The Whistle Blower is low key but pretty good. The Holcroft Covenant i saw years ago and thought it was bloody brilliant, so i am looking forward to getting my hands on that one. Water is pretty crappy. The Romantic Englishwoman i think is fantastic, but it will not be to everyones taste. Without a Clue - Crap. Half Moon Street is one of the few Caines i have not seen.

Half Moon Street is a bit of an oddity. The director, Bob Swaim, is an American who has spent many years working in France. He brings a strange detached feel to the film and draws a good performance from Sigourney Weaver (who is naked a lot). However, it drags along at a snail's pace and is ultimately unsatisfying. Caine is awful.

I remember that Caine was pretty much dismissive of the film in a magazine article i read a long time back. He was pretty awful in quite a lot of films in the 80's.

Oh, The Silver Bears is also in the giveaway.

I remember Silver Bears being pretty good, though completely ignored at the time. I don't think it shows up very often.

Funnily enough, Without a Clue is the only one amongst those titles that I like! An interesting variation on the traditional Holmes/Watson relationship.

"Water" was a Handmade Films production and I remember it getting a lot of hype at the time due to George Harrison's involvement and the other hit Handmade films that came before it. Script by Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais as well. If I have seen it, i can't remember a single thing about it.

I think it was 'Water' (not sure) where the BBC made a documentary on the making of it featuring the guy in 'Watch Dog' and following him around during the filming.
I'd give my right arm to be ambidextrous.

I remember 2 things about it:

1. Paul Heiney (from That's Life!) had a part in it through the TV programme "In at the deep end"- he was pretty terrible as I recall.

2. At the end of the film Billy Connolly sings a protest song at the UN backed by Eric Clapton, George Harrison and Ringo Starr amongst others.

I think the film's pretty terrible but worth it for the novelty value of that band!
