Had Orson Welles seen (I do not have the Simon Callow biography to hand) Anthony Asquith's COTTAGE TO LET? The climax of THE LADY FROM SHANGHAI (was there ever, incidentally, a film with a sillier plot?) is famous. But it strongly resembles that of the Asquith film, which predates it by some seven years, and in which John Mills's German spy is similarly shot to death amid fairground distorting mirrors. - Anthony Baker

Callow's book IIRC doesn't mention Cottage to Let but it is quite possible Orson saw it. The endings are indeed very similar. Although it is silly, I love The Lady From Shanghai.

Yipes, after reading the title of this thread too quickly I thought this was something to do with Orson Welles and Robin Askwith. Now there's a Confessions film that should have been made.
