Default Cannon And Ball Boys In Blue

Has anyone been unfortunate to see this film. I had forgotten all about it until the other day. No doubt it was dire, their telelvision work was bad enough.

Cannon and Ball weere under the sad illusion that they had what it took to be film stars. They were interviewed at the time and said that unlike Eric and Ernie they had a decent film script and would succeed. They were wrong and failed miserably. It must count as one of the worst attempts at a big screen debut by a TV performer(s). As if that wasn't enough the format was revived in the early 90's for TV with the duo under the title Plaza Patrol. Like the movie it failed.

That's the joke that killed the Music Hall

I've seen it but don't think I paid a great deal of attention at the time. I've held a masochistic desire to watch it again but not yet acted on it. As david says it's a modern reworking of the Will Hay classic.

Rock on Tommy! <sorry>

Yes Davidb you are right, the Radio Times film guide makes mention of this. It also says that Val Guest who Directed Boys in Blue had a hand in writing the screenplay for Ask A Policeman.

The guide describes Boys In Blue as stunningly awful., havent seen it myself but I well imagine that it is a pile of visual manure.

Yes, this is what I like to see. People slagging off a film before watching it.

It's a bit of daft fun, and nowhere near as bad as some people make out. That's coming from someone who's actually seen it.

Sadly Val Guest got involved as director (having worked on the original '30s script). A sad end to a generally interesting career.

I have seen it too .... I thought it was crap. Cannon and Ball cannot act and have no screen presence. Every gag is laboured to the point of pain and the production values make a Butchers film look like a David Lean epic. A very sorry end to the career of one of my favourite directors, Val Guest.

I wish I had claws.

Tragically, because it's a remake of Ask a Policeman, it's Sydney Gilliat's last credit though I assume he wasn't actually involved.

Histrionics aside. They weren't a good comedy act either.
I too thought it was dire.

They started off with high hope because in an interview they stated that they would succeed where Eric and Ernie failed because they had a top flight script. It may have been a great script in the draft used by Will Hay and indeed in its original form The Ghost Train, but not once they got their mits on it. Eric and Ern had charm and talent, qualities which have never afflicted Tommy and Bobby.
