Default Alastair Sim...

I know the great man must have been discussed a thousand times before on these boards but my wife has recently bought me the "Alastair Sim Collection" and I feel obliged to make the following report:

I'll make it brief, of the five films [The Green Man, Folly To Be Wise, Geordie, Left Right and Centre, Laughter in Paradise] I thought they were all very watchable and the set has taken pride of place along with my Terry Thomas and Ealing films etc, however, I have to say one of the films in the set was a dissapointment. I thought "Folly to be wise " was an absolute crock of crap. Alastair Sim was/is superb but the actor is only as good as the script, and in that film I'm sorry to say the script was at best, poor.

Interesting and helpful. I am just in the process of trying find Folly to be Wise, and it is only available at a rather high cost here in the US. I was going to run a thread on it.

I think I may wait a bit until I can find it at a cheaper price - or through our library loan system.

It's a shame they didn't include Waterloo Road in the set. I watched it just yesterday and it had everything.

Alastair Sim! John Mills! Stewart Granger! And a mighty punch-up scene!

Class acts all round.

I would never advise anyone not to buy Folly to be Wise, however, it certainly isn't one of Alastair Sims best films. (in my humble)

Waterloo Road isn't a film I have in my collection, I'm not keen on Stewart Granger tbh, I would however buy the film to watch Alastair Sim.

Oh yes - I understand you were not giving advice. Any film with Alistair Sim is worth seeing, and I will certainly see it at some point.

But I take everything I read into consideration and this helps to determine when I buy a film, how much I spend and whether I start out by borrowing through a library.

This forum is very helpful in that way.

Except maybe the 2nd St. Trinian's film, Blue Murder at St. Trinian's (1957) where Alastair reprises the role as Miss Fritton - but is in jail for the whole film and we only ever see him a few times.

It still has its charms, but don't get it just to see Alastair

Well, if you're not a fan of Mr Granger, this may be the film for you!
