Obscure tv-wise, well according to imdb dartsman Eric Bristow appeared in an episode of "Never the Twain", miler Steve Cram appeared in but one episode of Spender, while Kojak lookalike Olympic swimming gold medalist Duncan Goodhew appeared in "I'Lovett". Apparently. Three big sporting names, but I'll leave to decide which of the shows was the most obscure.

Didn't Ossie Ardillas also appear in an episode of 'Spender'.

So Buster Crabbe was #1 worst sportsman turned film star ..... that would have pleased his old swimming rival Johnny 'Tarzan' Weismuller, they hated each other's guts!

You can see their hostility to each other on display in their only film together ...

Swamp Fire (1946)

Can anyone recall the name of the show in which Terry Downes's character used an electrolarynx machine?

America seem to like gold medal winners. The 1976 Olympic Decathlon Champion, Bruce Jenner starred in 'Can't Stop The Music'

Stirling Moss has a brief appearance in Hammer's early Mask of Dust (link to my review). The sports commentator Raymond Baxter also appears as himself.

ah yes, good shout

According to imdb Ian Botham appeared in an episode of an early 90s programme called "Ellington" about the boxing scene, but I'm damned if I can remember that one!

It was a kind of poor man's Minder and starred Chris Ellison from The Bill. It only lasted a few episodes.

The final episode of Charters and Caldicott is actually filmed at a test match (England vs West Indies c1984). At least, I assume the long dialogue scenes aren't because that would be very annoying for the other people in the stands, but there are enough shots of proper actors doing actory stuff with the match in the background to suggest that they spent at least a day filming at Old Trafford. Are there any other examples of scenes taking place at real sporting events, rather than the usual splicing of stock footage?
