At least, I assume the long dialogue scenes aren't because that would be very annoying for the other people in the stands, but there are enough shots of proper actors doing actory stuff with the match in the background to suggest that they spent at least a day filming at Old Trafford. Are there any other examples of scenes taking place at real sporting events, rather than the usual splicing of stock footage?
In which England were soundly trounced in the fourth part of a 5-0 whitewash - no wonder C & C ended up inadvertently solving mysteries, it would have been too painful to watch the cricket!

Steve McQueen's Le Mans was filmed at the 1970 drive-athon.

There is a scene in an episode of Minder where Terry (Dennis Waterman) is seen watching a football match, Chelsea I think, and his name is then shown on the electronic public address screen which read - Would a Mr. McCann please go the the main office.

The Galloping Major has a brief appearance by Charlie Smirke, a well-known jockey of the time though like most people mentioned in this thread, he's not much of an actor. It also has life nearly imitating art in that the fictional Grand National involves an outsider

Don't think he made any Brit films but let's not forget O.J. Simpson ( Naked Gun, Capricorn One etc ) - actually, maybe we should forget O.J. Simpson.....

Another motor sport star who appeared in film, and had lines to remember, was Australian maestro Jack Brabham. Now if I could only remember the title of the b/w motor racing film he appeared in.
Someone out there will know (probably Bats!).

Just checked IMDB and answered my own question. The film I was trying to remember was "The Green Helmet" with Bill Travers. He also appeared uncredited as a driver in "Grand Prix" and played himself in a number of racing related films.

Seing Rob's surname prompts the memory that cricketer/footballer Denis appeared in the 1953 film. Is he a relation of Rob's I wonder

I have a recollection that a scene in one of the early Doctor In.. films was shot during a rugby international at Twickenham - England v Wales.
